About this deal

For me, the Otty deluxe pillow feels like a ‘corporate’ pillow – smart and supportive with clear branding. Over the last few years, we have seen many retailers offer memory foam pillows to complement their ‘mattress in a box’ offerings and Otty is one of these. Otty was established by a young entrepreneur, looking for a great night sleep after a busy day at the office and you can see this influence on the Otty pillow which has a modern design. Synthetic pillows are usually made from polyester. As they’re hypoallergenic, they’re great for allergy sufferers and also affordable, lightweight and easy to care for. They’re good if you sleep in a variety of positions throughout the night too. But they aren’t as malleable or breathable as other pillows and they have the shortest lifespan of all pillows – with the filling often prone to clumping. There’s a whole world of pillow fillings out there, so we’ve summarised the pros and cons of the various types below. Just like Nectar’s A Whole Night Sleep pillow, the loft (or height) of the Emma Premium Microfibre Pillow can be adjusted by adding or removing one of its layers. The difference with Emma’s pillow is that it’s made from microfibre rather than memory foam. We found it much more “squishy” than most of its foam counterparts, so we’d argue it’s best suited to sleepers who prefer a softer pillow. In reality, this new AirTech foam (also used in the Original Hybrid OTTY mattress) is an open-cell foam that's not as dense as the regular one and is, therefore, more breathable. However, in the real world, there's only so much you can do to make foam genuinely breathable.

Anti-allergy means that the filling and case have been treated specifically with chemicals to combat dust mites. If you have asthma, eczema or rhinitis, you might find an anti-allergy pillow best – plus you can still get one that's made of feathers if preferred.

The best memory foam pillows to buy

A common issue is that, since memory foam works by reacting to your body heat, the heat it retains can cause it to become uncomfortably warm. Many of us prefer a cool pillow over a warm one (temperature-regulating cooling pillows exist for this very reason), so it’s worth taking this into account when buying a memory foam pillow. Of course, most brands are well aware of this fact and have implemented their own techniques (such as Dormeo’s Octaspring technology) to ensure you don’t overheat in the night. If your mornings are plagued by runny noses, coughing, or sneezing, it could be that your pillow is triggering an allergic reaction. If you're allergic to dust mites, getting an anti-allergy pillow that can be washed often is the best way to prevent dust mites from settling into your pillow. When buying a pillow, make sure it can be easily cleaned, or is machine washable – ideally at 60°C or higher as dust mites can be killed and their allergens removed at high washing and drying temperatures. Wash your bedding regularly: washing your sheets, pillowcases, and bedding protectors at 60°C or more can kill any dust mites. Be sure to follow the care label to avoid damaging your sheets.

Key specs – Filling: Memory foam; Cover: 45% Ice Yarn, 55% polyester (machine washable); Sizes: Standard size only Onto the 2nd mattress, no chemical smell this time thank goodness as that smell is vile, just over a year and this one split in the same way, this one was replaced this time. Key features – Filling: Goose down and feathers; Cover: 100% cotton cover (machine washable) Sizes: Standard, superking, squareThere’s nothing more annoying than being disturbed by a snoring, restless partner when you’re trying to get a good night’s sleep. While there’s not much you can do about the snoring – although our guide to how to stop snoring could help – you can do something about the mattress to stop you noticing their every move. There are three main traditional types of pillow: feather and down, hollowfibre/microfibre and memory foam. Secondly, make sure that the fibres on the protector or outer case are tightly woven. If you can see bits of feather or strands of fibres poking through the pillow, the outer casing likely isn't tight enough to prevent mites from entering.

It’s easy to assume this is irrelevant as you’ll have a pillowcase covering it. But it’s worth noting that natural cover fabrics such as cotton have much more breathability than polyester and other man-made fibres, which can make for a far more comfortable night’s sleep if you’re prone to getting hot at night. How we test pillows As for the build quality – it's top-notch. We have to give credit where credit is due. No loose threads, no funky smells (other than regular foam smell) and so on. All in all – very solid craftsmanship that should last you for years to come. Despite the high-tech credentials, the Simba Hybrid feels surprisingly like a traditional pillow – much more so than some all-foam competitors. Unlike microfibre and feather pillows, which tend to be either soft or supportive but rarely both, the Simba Hybrid finds that sweet spot right out of the box. It’s worth noting, however, that unlike the Simba Hybrid mattress, there’s no trial period with its bedding products. The cover of the OTTY pillow is made of a fully breathable material that allows the pillow to breathe. It feels nice and soft and it features a pattern that makes it look premium. The design follows the one that is found in the OTTY mattress, so expect the grey sides and the logo on top. You can remove the cover and pop it inside your washing machine every time you want to clean it. Make sure, you use a gentle cycle at 40 degrees. Overall, this is a high-quality cover that does the job so no complaints at all. Support Even if you get a hypoallergenic pillow or anti-allergy bedding, there are still ways dust mites can infiltrate your bedroom. To further prevent them, you can:

Support & Comfort

We've compiled our best advice when shopping for an anti-allergy or hypoallergenic pillow to help ease your symptoms. What is the difference between hypoallergenic pillows and anti-allergy pillows? This is not one of the coolest foam pillows we've tested so far. Granted, memory foam tends to sleep hot, but considering OTTY claims this one does a good job at dissipating heat – we have to hold it against them. The mattress is also reasonably priced and great value for money compared to other hybrid designs that have similarly luxurious finishes. The mattress comes well equipped with everything you need to get it out of the box and set up on your bed easily, doesn’t leave much of an odour after opening and well ventilating the room, and it has just enough cushioning on its firm support design to leave you feeling comfortable during the night. I also found that as the weeks went on and I got used to the mattress, I became less restless and found it easier to find the best sleeping position, so much so that my Oura Ring’s ‘sleep score’ improved over the course of a week. My partner commented that he didn’t notice me move throughout the night as much as I normally do either, and likewise I didn’t notice him move so much and that’s definitely a nod to the mattress' impressive motion transfer technology. Memory foam is typically made out of polyurethane, which isn't a suitable environment for dust mites to live in and is hypoallergenic. They're often the most supportive and last a longer time than other pillows. They can be too warm though, and some people dislike how dense they can be.

It’s a little bit firmer than the Otty Deluxe, but it’s not so firm that it feels clinical, instead landing somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. It comes with an inbuilt protector, plus a soft, breathable and hypoallergenic bamboo cover (which can be washed at 40°C), which helps you to keep things fresher than washing your pillowcase alone .To cut things short, the OTTY Deluxe Pillow is neither eco-friendly nor sustainable. Just like any other memory foam pillow encased in polyester. These are materials that have many amazing features, but are not beneficial for our environment. The situation is slightly better when recycled polyester is used, but to our knowledge OTTY used virgin polyester. How did we test the product?
