In 1935, Earhart became a visiting professor at Purdue University at the invitation of Purdue president Edward Elliott, an advocate of higher education for women, especially in engineering and science. From her early life sent to live the winter months with her lonely grandmother in Atchison, Kansas, to the increasingly strained years with her parents and sister as her father drank and her parents' marriage deteriorated, she was the bright, adventurous light.

I adored the audiobook narration by Anna Fields/Kate Fleming, even if I at times had to rewind to jot down facts. At the back of this book there is a facts and photo section to support the story told (great for parents and older children hungry for a few more details). v=1607025179","options":["Title"],"media":[{"alt":null,"id":16251969863832,"position":1,"preview_image":{"aspect_ratio":0. This charmingly illustrated hardback picture book is a fantastic way to acquaint young readers with Amelia Earhart. Earhart soloed in 1921, bought her first airplane, a Kinner Airster, in 1922 and wasted no time in setting a women's altitude record of 4,267 meters (14,000 feet). The marriage did thrive, with George often placed in the position of working to make Amelia's various flying expeditions go smoothly. v=1607025179","width":987},{"alt":null,"id":16251991687320,"position":2,"preview_image":{"aspect_ratio":1. In August of 1929, she placed third in the All-Women's Air Derby, behind Louise Thaden and Gladys O'Donnell, which was the first transcontinental air race for women (from Santa Monica, California to Cleveland, Ohio) and a race she helped organized.

Young Hawaiian men were sent to colonize the islands, living there in shifts under the supervision of the Department of the Interior. During her 3,260-kilometer (2,026-mile) nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic on May 20-21, 1932, Earhart fought fatigue, a leaky fuel tank, and a cracked manifold that spewed flames out the side of the engine cowling. Illuminated here for the first time in picture book form is the true story of a thrilling night when they made history together.
