About this deal

Hal has been happily developing his own arc and growing as a character, leading me to fear that he was going to suffer an Alex Rider style comedown in his final outing as the realities of the adult world become to real. G. Leonard, Sam Sedgman and Elisa Paganelli step up the urgency, wonder and engagement in the The Arctic Railway Assassin. It is an easy, engaging read, but for me fell slightly flat by not really giving the reader a chance to solve the mystery first from clues in the story. The illustrations are gorgeous and there is so much action you can just fly through these so quickly. When they are able to board the train is about to leave when a strange looking woman in a puffy ski jacket and bobble hat with carrier bags in her hands runs for the train.

The Adventures on Trains series is published in the UK and US by Macmillan, and is licensed to more than fifteen countries around the world, including China, the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Latin America, the Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Spain and Sweden. Hal and Uncle Nat travel to Sweden, boarding the overnight train to Narvik, the northernmost station in Europe, to see the Northern Lights just before Christmas.A wonderful book in a great series which would excite the imaginations of many a young reader (and plenty of older ones too! Alex O'Connell, The Times The latest thrilling instalment of the Adventures on Trains series finds Hal and Uncle Nat on the night train to the Arctic Circle - with a sinister figure pursuing the stunning locomotive. Mystery, travel, thrilling train journey, detectives and more, this middle-grade book for ages 10+ excites young minds with danger, intrigue and reindeer. It’s at that point that Hal notices Katerina, who helps Hal as the danger becomes life- threatening aboard the Narvik train to the North Pole.

This experience has been fantastic primarily for the children, the school and also for me (professionally). In this book the action level is set to high with a killer code and assassins on the loose, desperate to find it. Elisa Paganelli was born in Modena (Italy) in 1985, and since childhood books have been her bestfriends. The latest thrilling instalment of the Adventures on Trains series finds Hal and Uncle Nat on the night train to the Arctic Circle - with a sinister figure pursuing the stunning locomotive. These are fun, action-packed adventures in the style of a modern Agatha Christie for a 8-14 audience. But this is a perfectly pitched and delivered ending and a fitting way to showcase some of the best detective writing around.

A small niggle is that the books do at times strike the tone, just a touch, of left-leaning political content and green/environmental nonsense, but if you can look past this than the whole series is a really great read. I do think this has become my new favourite though, there is real suspense and peril and the action builds throughout. The Arctic Railway Assassin can be read as a stand-alone novel, or enjoyed as part of the award-winning Adventures on Trains series written by M. They are travelling to the Aurora Sky Station in the Arctic circle, to see the Northern Lights for Christmas. This sixth instalment is another whistle-stop ride through snowy landscapes - perfect for the wintry season. Pan Macmillan) The next-door cabin to Hal’s and Uncle Nat’s on the Narvik train is empty when Uncle Nat’s friend withdraws from the journey.
