About this deal

The player will then lay down all his/her books and/or runs, discard one card, and count the cards remaining in his/her hand as points against him/her. If you’re getting down to the end or someone has gone out, don’t just throw any face card down to lower your count.

For example, if you’re waiting for one of two cards for a run and you see the player across from dumping a bunch of them, it may be time to switch strategy. Card Values: Each number card is worth its face value, Jacks are 11 points, Queens are 12, Kings are 13, Jokers are 50, and the current wild card is 20 points. Numbered cards are worth their face value, while the current numbered wild card is worth twenty points. There’s a way to play it without the official cards, but while it’s not exactly the same, it’s pretty darn close. The game is designed for 2-7 players, but can also be played with 8 players if a second deck of cards is added. The value of the cards on the table does not matter, only cards remaining unused in the hand are counted. You can have as many wild cards or Jokers in a run as you wish (and they may be adjacent to each other). I also include a handy table, breaking down each game in terms of difficulty, number of players, and the time it takes to play.

This may depend on the score differential between yourself and the current winning player, or player(s) closest to you if you are currently winning. So, in the first round, the three cards will be wild, the four cards will be wild in the second round, and so on. As an incentive to “keep score,” I suggest counting all the points against you in your discard pile.Start your turn as normal, then lay down your entire hand in books and/or runs on the table in front of you before discarding your last card. While wilds, five suits, and two decks make it less likely that you’ll end up with a group of two that can’t be completed, the odds may be lower. Five Crowns is a very unusual card game in many respects, and it uses five decks instead of the standard four.

You can come from behind even in the last round; hence the slogan, The game isn't over 'til the Kings go wild!

You can have as many wild cards or Jokers in a book as you wish (and they may be adjacent to each other).

The player to the dealer’s left goes first; before attempting to make runs/books take either a card from the draw pile or the top card from the discard pile. Though not part of the official rules I have seen, our “house rule” is that in case of a tie, the winner is the player who went out the most number of hands. As someone with a lot of experience in rummy games, I picked up on Five Crowns pretty easily and won almost every time by following these tips. The deck includes five suits with 11 cards in each suit (3 through King), as well as six wild cards. Once scores are tallied, the next hand begins with the player on the left (clockwise) becoming the dealer. Many, many games feature similar mechanics where you try to lay off cards by grouping them into sets and melds. Watch For Sets Over Runs For Faster Matches – There are 10 of each card, so your odds are pretty good of getting sets.
