About this deal

Erica Maity narrated. I have to say it was fantastic. From pacing to tone, she captured the essence of the story and helped build on the scenes and suspense. Her character voices were flawless, and she added another level of enjoyment to this thriller. Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die. This book is so fun, such a fresh voice in romance! Suzanne Glidewell's debut is a sweet romance with themes of home and self-discovery set in Seattle. As someone who recently moved to WA, I enjoyed the references to Seattle-specific beers and neighborhoods that I have been in the process of exploring. Her characters are incredibly easy to root for, both multi-dimensional and loveable. While I am not a practicing Catholic the majority of my family is and I felt this book was written very true to the faith and practices. It was easy to picture the story and feel like I was part of Thomas and Maura’s journey. Life is hard and messy and complicated and these two have quite the path to forge. I’m looking forward to book #2 to see how their journey ends.

Somewhere In Between by Donna Milner | Goodreads

Their visits through the portal bring them teetering along a tight-rope of fantasy and reality, where they don't always believe what is in front of them, not even their feelings for each other. I’d like to start off by saying that I am a tremendous fan of the author. Her first two books blew me away with her exceptional and brilliant story telling ability. This also applies to Somewhere In Between in regards to her skills as an author. And I can’t say enough about the narration by Erica Maity. It was flawless perfection! Gentle and moving, The In-Between takes readers where few think they would want to go: deep into the world of hospice nursing. The combined beauty, faith, and compassion found in each patient’s death is meaningful and sublime.” —Theresa Brown, RN, New York Times bestselling author of The Shift On law and ethics – well I hope Dom writes that book someday because our broken moral compass continues to wreak havoc in the very fabric of society and the family nucleus. While trust between individuals is what ultimately holds society together, the law is meant to uphold truth and justice. Justice should be ‘blind’. But sadly professional ethics remains a hindrance to biased and prejudiced attorneys, advocates and especially (female, feminist) judges – who must 'win' at all costs, in the name of social justice. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts. As quoted from Lord Jeffrey: “Opinions founded on prejudice are always sustained with the greatest of violence”. How tragic, especially in family law.

Catholicism and faith sit center-stage in this story, which in the beginning I found difficult to read as a Boston Catholic whose family left the church after the 2001 abuse revelations. Glidewell has a really beautiful way of writing about faith that brings a lot of depth to the story, so I found myself able to enjoy the story despite my own experiences in Catholicism. A conversation at Tim Horton's (a coffee shop) begins the story of a couple looking to buy a ranch in the Chilcotin region of British Columbia. Then the landscape takes over and the first chapter becomes a beautiful description of the expanse of land. It helps to ground readers in place and introduces one of the forms of silence explored in Somewhere In-Between. This particular silence is an appreciation of the surroundings: the old-growth forest, the willow-lined creek and "a haze of coastal mountains." There were a few minor issues unrelated to my bias that seemed a bit random. And based on the title, I was expecting a more fast paced suspense thriller. However, this does NOT diminish the brilliance of the author’s writing. Dawn is a master of seamlessly moving between time and space with her storylines. And her ability to create solid, believable characters (even ones you hate!) magnifies the talent of her craft. The book is about changes—the ones that you can control, and the ones that you can’t. It’s about commitment and friendship. It’s about the stages in between where you have nothing but the unknown ahead of you.

I love a good mystery, and this one kept me guessing. Above all, however, this is a book about families and human relationships. The descriptions of the physical beauty of Chilcotin country are so exact, so gorgeous that I wanted to drive up there tomorrow. You can smell the fresh air, hear the wind in the trees, see the sparkling lake waters.
