About this deal

Forge World nonsense, the Warpgnaw is a Verminlord that hasn’t been properly updated for the new tome. It’s got the previous edition’s 12 wounds and the previous edition’s approach to Verminlord points.

Malevolent – Re-roll wound rolls of 1 with melee weapons. Useful on the Verminlord Corruptor, kind of, still not really. C- Larger groups of ratmen are also bolstered by the Strength in Numbers rule. This adds two to your Skaven’s Bravery score for every ten models in a unit, meaning that, whilst their Bravery is comparatively low, with enough bodies behind them, any Skaven becomes a hero. They’re OK, but get overlooked by the sheer weight of the Skaven catalogue (and those awful minis don’t help either). You’re getting half as many per unit as Clanrats but for 10 points less. They’re a bit faster, a bit squishier and might do a smattering of mortal wounds. Really you’re taking these for two reasons: you’re pure Eshin and need something to hide a Deathmaster in, or you’re specifically buying their pre-game move. Pre-game moves are absolutely fantastic, but this is a 2d6” move so far less reliable than other armies can achieve out of the same mechanic. Gutter Runners As for the Chaos Lord on Karkadrak – it’s a fun little combat monster that has impressive offensive and defensive capabilities, a nice leader to have when you’re learning a new faction. Any Hedonites of Slaanesh force is going to want at least one of these boxes, as when you first start out they can form a nice little core to your forces – but when you eventually develop out your forces to a full 2000 points you can phase some of these models out and use them as forces to bring on thanks to your summon mechanic – an essential buy in our opinion.

Rising from their graves to reignite their war against the living, the Nighthaunt come prepared with a Vanguard box full of spectral soldiers. With a grim hero leading an otherworldly battleline, this is a great way to start a new army – or reinforce an existing one. 20 groaning Chainrasps flow across the battlefield in a wave of incorporeal death, while 10 Grimghast Reapers, three Spirit Hosts, and a macabre Knight of Shrouds set to stripping fresh souls from their victims. Skryre’s-breath Bellows– Start of any/each hero phase the bearer can use the relic and roll a dice for each enemy unit within 3” of it, on a 4+ the unit suffers D3 mortal wounds. Unfortunately this does also hit friendly units, so probably not worth killing your own models to maybe kill an enemy or two. C This is a great box for starting Sylvaneth or Living City. The Treelord can be built as one of 2 different heroes too, either the Treelord Ancient or the Spirit of Durthu. You could easily buy 2 of these boxes and convert one of the Branchwyches into a Branchwraith for a decent sized 1000pt list. Keep them alive with the wide range of defensive and healing abilities available to skaven armies, along with a re-rollable save and negating wounds on a 5+ thanks to the Scry-orb and Protection of the Horned Rat abilities, to keep generating those extra command points.Kavzar was a rare thing in the world of Warhammer: it was a near-utopia. Man and dwarf lived in harmony for many years until they decided to raise a colossal temple of thanks to their gods. Unfortunately, their ambition outstripped their abilities, leaving the structure’s giant spire unfinished. One day, a stranger appeared and promised to finish the temple in a single night – with one condition: that he be allowed to hang a horned bell from the top. The citizens of Kavzar agreed and went to sleep for the night. The next day, to their amazement, the temple was complete. The stranger, however, was nowhere to be seen. Pretty bad! They’re all pretty bad and not particularly interesting. In fact, it’s not worth going through them one-by-one here. Every one requires you to have three Masterclan or Clans Moulder/Eshin/Verminus/Skryre/Pestilens heroes from your starting army still on the battlefield. It requires skew, it’s win-more, it’s a shame. Units Unfortunately, the Skaven doesn’t grab a great box. While the minis inside are useful, this is one of the lowest values we’ve seen in a while. Still, if you need all of the minis inside, it’s still cheaper than buying them on their own, and you basically get the Clanrats for free. Vanguard: Nighthaunt

If you run the Bray-Shaman as your General and build the Ungors as regular Ungors, you’ll get another legal list from this box as he will turn your Bestigors into Battleline giving you the required Hero and 2 Battleline again. Ungor Raiders however are one of the few ranged units available to Chaos and certainly to Beasts of Chaos in particular so if you want to do anything in the shooting phase you might want to build them as Raiders. You don’t see this massively often but it does perform a useful function, especially now that the Screaming Bell isn’t providing the same benefit. Most players will choose offensive endless spells but if Nighthaunt remains a meta terror and the rules that deny inspiring presence continue to increase then this is a tool in the toolbox, and cheap. Vermintide Malevolent – Re-roll wound rolls of 1 with melee weapons. You would think the Assassins would be the ones that could make use of this trait, but there are just better choices. C Savage Overlord– +1 Bravery to all Vermintide units wholly within 18”. Last time you have to see me say this is bad: it’s bad. DStart a new Disciples of Tzeentch army or add to an existing one with this new Vanguard box. Led by a powerful Magister on Disc of Tzeentch, it includes 10 Tzaangors, 10 Kairic Acolytes, and daemonic support in the form of three incendiary Flamers of Tzeentch and three swift Screamers of Tzeentch. Not only are you saving money, but the boxes help you branch out into new units that are staples for the faction. For example, the Flesheater’s Start Collecting box gives you a Terrorgheist- a massive winged behemoth with Command Ability support. Verminous Valour – After save rolls or rolls to ignore wounds, pass wounds off of the hero to a nearby friendly Skaventide unit within 3” on the roll of a 4+, or a 5+ if the hero is a Monster or War Machine. Same as above, nice on helping keep a Verminlord alive if near hordes. B- The poor Doomwheel doesn’t quite get there. A little too fragile, too random, too pricey and occupying a behemoth slot really pushes it out of contention. This is a shame as it’s so close to being useful, with a good pokey gun and the rolling doom rule letting it move over units with a wounds characteristic of 3 or less and doing mortal wounds when it does so. They’re a lot of fun if you do take them, though it would be nice to see a re-write on more-more speed as the punishment for rolling a double 1 (your opponent getting to move the model) is far too big currently. Diseased– At the beginning of each of your own hero phases roll a dice if the general is within 3” of any enemy units, on a 4+ then one enemy unit within 3” suffers D3 mortal wounds. Most Pestilens characters don’t want to be in melee range that long and with Scurry Away you’re likely not going to be within 3” of enemies during the hero phase. Take something else. C

Deranged Inventor – Beginning of each shooting phase choose a Skryre unit wholly within 13” and re-roll all hit rolls with ranged weapons. Great to buff a unit of Stormfiends or Acolytes without relying on magic going off. A The other half of the original Age of Sigmar Starter Box. This is an amazing deal, with just the single flaw that the Retributors are only in a unit of 3 so you’ll pay the full price of 5 Retributors for those 3. Otherwise this a decent starting point for fans of the armoured warriors of Sigmar. If you fancy adding onto this force with some magical reinforcements, consider splitting a starter set with a Nighthaunt player for a suite of useful units to any Stormcast player. Verminous Valour – After save rolls or rolls to ignore wounds, pass wounds off of the hero to a nearby friendly Skaventide unit within 3” on the roll of a 4+, or a 5+ if the hero is a Monster or War Machine. Best on a Plague Furnace to help it stay on the table longer while surrounded by plague monks, but there are better options here. B-No-one knows what happened in Kavzar, for the city was never heard of again. What was Kavzar became known as Skavenblight, a colossal city at the heart of an underground empire of tunnels, where rat-men – now known as Skaven – burrowed across the world.
