What is unique is that they are placed in a wider context which challenges the assumptions that lie behind our criminal justice policy. A very good book that takes the reader through the complex world of criminal law and the role of the judge with intellectual clarity and precision. This is a book full of dark subjects with plenty of content warnings to be aware of, but it's very engaging and I didn't get bored at all. For anyone who is interested in more detail of the law being applied, there are detailed appendices which you can consult for further reading but, if that’s not your bag, you don’t need to go into that much depth to understand the points being made.Because she no longer sits as a judge she was able to publish this fascinating book which has been described in reviews as describes the book as a “novel”. However, no progress has been made on improving the ethnic diversity of judges: ‘Where we have failed completely and utterly is on the ethnicity front. Joseph QC can therefore add in some drama, change of perspectives and hidden, shocking reveals at the turn of a page.
