About this deal

Combat is completed with a dice roll based on the attacker’s power value, their distance from the enemy, and the cover bonus on the enemy tile. You could assemble the entire metropolitan area with all of the tiles if you had a big enough table. Upon a successful attack (and rolling a zero is an auto success) the faction that suffered the loss must discard a copy of a card of that specific unit into a casualty pile. Alternatively, two of the combatants on each side are Upgraded to give them new abilities gained through their battle experience.

It is much less abstract and does something similar to this 1p and avoids most of the criticisms you have here, while maintaining the heartbreak of “old friend” platoon or leader losses. The other is a set of replacements for those tiles if the originals get destroyed or fortified as part of the action. The two forces are more diverse, the scenario design is far more engaging and the campaign rules are outstanding. It’s here where the quality of the scene-setting briefings by Robbie MacNiven prove their worth as you get drawn into the lives of Max and Uri and their squads as their struggle evolves.Consenting to these technologies will allow us and our partners to process personal data such as browsing behavior or unique IDs on this site. With Undaunted: Stalingrad, the designers have moved the action to Eastern Front, but this isn’t just a reskin. These represent battlefield uncertainty and are gained when you scout out new tiles, a prerequisite for moving. The fighting men (or in some Soviet cases women) area move from tile to tile and conduct operations specific to their class. And — just like a good game of XCOM — when those soldiers die in combat, they’re removed from the game permanently.

Not all objectives are as varied, but in a battle of inching out control of a region, the simulation has a very thematic grounding. Undaunted: Stalingrad is a monumental standalone game that expands the series' scope and challenge beyond anything that's come before. These are far more diverse than previous Undaunted games, which were mostly a race to control specific victory tiles. Osprey Games is the dedicated games division of Osprey Publishing (part of Bloomsbury Publishing plc) and publishes a wide range of wargames, card games, and board games and roleplaying games. For those who’ve not played the Undaunted series, here’s a brief overview of what you do on your turn: you play cards to send soldiers to their doom, repeatedly. Even if you don’t ultimately lose the territory, it will never again provide the same degree of protection from the enemy snipers. What sets Undaunted apart is the way that the designers make the deck stand in for aspects of morale and unit cohesion without any additional rules overhead. Depending on the number of casualties just sustained a certain number of active participants are lost. Victory always wins you something, maybe it’s control of a section of the city or an extra promotion.

But if players can hold their noses long enough, they’ll find a surprisingly compelling historical narrative and rock-solid strategy gameplay — and a fast-moving campaign that they can easily finish in a single weekend. Replacements arrive – troopers with weakened stat-lines and artwork that illustrates headwounds or a lack of quality gear. The deckbuilding is excellent, and the campaign setting provides a brutal reality of war as your units slowly dwindle to the point of being a platoon full of reserves. Similarly the 129 map tiles not only represent a massive 72 tile depiction of the streets centred on Pavlov’s house on the edge of 9 January Square but also how those same streets are changed by being fortified or by being reduced to rubble. When I lost the rifleman after pushing too hard, and then drawing them after the mission when they were, sadly, in the casualty pile, I immediately regretted the decision to rush.

It’s a wargame that those closest to me might actually enjoy playing because the mechanics are light, fun, and incredibly fast. It’s a place we’ve battled over in dozens of different titles, even seen firsthand in video games like Battlefield 1942, IL-2 Sturmovik, and Red Orchestra 2. And that means fans of traditional board games will have a difficult time choosing between this game’s two utterly deplorable factions. Many scenarios make new cards available to your deck, from off-map assets like bombers to on-map tanks. However, Undaunted: Stalingrad bucks that trend with changes that elevate the excellent original in every way. Additionally, the game benefits from a singular, branching campaign that slowly ratchets up the tension and cleverly adds more units to your reserve pool over time. A successful attack on the board means a corresponding card of that type is removed: from the hand, play area, discard pile or the deck but not from the Supply. On the other hand, if you already are an Undaunted fan then entrench yourself on the banks of the Volga in Undaunted: Stalingrad. Following on from the launch of Undaunted: Stalingrad later this year in 2022, Undaunted: Battle Of Britain will be taking to the skies in Spring 2023!
