Jim Hawkins is secretly reading the story of the notorious Captain Flint, the creator of the legendary "Treasure Planet", past his bedtime. Story holds less than you'd expect: a Metcalf intro (1:01) and, more excitingly, the original theatrical trailer for Disney's live-action 1950 film Treasure Island (2:08), which wasn't even included on the film's DVD that debuted alongside this film's DVD. Also missing on Blu-ray but found on DVD: the set-top game "Treasure Hunt" adapted from the RLS Legacy Virtual 3D Tour, three still art galleries (consisting of several hundreds of images divided into Visual Development, Paintings, and Moments), 15 character galleries, a 25-image story art gallery, a 36-image color keys gallery, and two poster designs. Twelve years later, Jim has grown into an aloof troublemaker after his father abandoned him when he was a child.

Suddenly, the crew members come in, and Jim overhears Silver rallying them, crushing Jim's trust when he realizes that Silver is the lead mutineer. This is the third Disney film to adapt the story of the novel Treasure Island, after Treasure Island and Muppet Treasure Island.

As the planet collapses, Silver attempts to escape with a boatload of treasure, but abandons it to save Jim. The film employs a novel technique of hand-drawn 2D traditional animation set atop 3D computer animation.It should be noted, however, that it had a positive reception from movie critics and that the film has gained a strong cult following and got nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The plot of the film would have focused on Jim Hawkins's enrolment in the Royal Interstellar Academy and would eventually confront the main antagonist of the film, Ironbeard. As the pirates prepare to collect the loot, Jim finds the skeletal remains of Flint, holding the missing component to B.
