Easily the biggest change to the Tile Mate (2022) is Tile's decision to do away with the replaceable battery on this model. The app shows you all the different Tiles you have - as well as devices registered to the Tile service - and also includes your phone and any other phones with the Tile app. Not that the mate feels at all fragile, but the pro’s metal build makes it more suitable for life outside, perhaps strapped to the rucksack you take mountain biking, or a suitcase subjected to anything baggage handlers can throw at it.

The existing Tile team will remain in place, and Life360 has said it has no plans to sell Tile user data. The Tile Pro (2021) remains Tile's premium tracker, with the best feature set of any Tile key finder (as we'll see momentarily). The Apple AirTag may have brought possession trackers and key finders into the spotlight since its arrival in 2021.Instead, like the latest versions of the Tile Slim and Tile Sticker, the Mate runs on a non-replaceable battery that should last for three years. It’s also good that Tile is committing to some anti-stalking features, but they’re not available at the time of writing and not as impressive as Apple’s. The trackers all have tiny speakers on them; they'll play a shrill little ringtone when you press the "locate" button, and you go hunt down the noise. Apple has provided support for the longest, starting with the 2019 iPhone 11, while Samsung started with the 2021 Galaxy S21. This is still far in excess of the other Tile models, as well as far in excess of the Apple and Samsung alternatives - so Pro is the model we'd go for.

That's because Tile is limited to the number of people running the Tile app on their phones, while pretty much any iPhone with an active Bluetooth or UWB connection can report a missing AirTag. But those compromises are made up for by a louder speaker, greater Bluetooth range, and a battery that can be replaced when it runs dry. There have been many generations of Tile over the years, and the company has expanded its product line to include Tiles that stick onto your possessions, plus credit card-sized Tiles designed to slip into your wallet or purse. The feature isn’t the most comprehensive anti-stalking method we’ve seen and it won’t roll out until early 2022, but it’s a good start for Tile. The two-tone plastic of the 2020 model is gone, and so are the flat sides, which makes the Tile Mate feel slimmer than ever. It can be placed on your keyring, in a bag or in a pocket, and you’ll feel perfectly at ease tossing it around.Once you've installed the app you're walked through a simple process to register and connect those Tile devices to your phone. If your Tile is found by someone who isn't a Tile user, on the 2021 versions of the Tile Pro, Tile Mate and Tile Slim, there's a QR code on the rear of the devices.
