For me, the crowning achievement of The Young Team is that, more than any other book I have read, it makes me understand, like and sympathise with the wee neds that I spent a lot of my youth trying not to get a kicking from.

He felt low and isolated, struggling through bouts of anxiety and depression during his time as a student. They should be spoken about- and Graeme has given young men a platform, a safe space to read about and discuss these issues with pals. Graeme experienced many brushes with tragedy as a teenager: Three of his friends suffered heroin overdoses, one of which he had witnessed at a party aged 16.

It went beyond the stereotype and showed us people who get involved in violent territorial gangs do so for the brotherhood, sense of belonging and status within “the scheme”. Was nearly going to give this four stars as I was really enjoying it but felt there were too many cliches towards the end which spoiled it.I had the privilege of not going down a drinks/drugs route because the system wasn’t pitted against me. Armstrong added: “I am absolutely buzzing to be working with Claire Mundell at Synchronicity and the team to develop ‘The Young Team’ for the screen. When he falls for the “subtle n feminine” Monica, he’s confronted by adult emotions for the first time and the insurmountable barrier of class. I told people about how my pal had murdered someone and we both ended up in Stirling: Him for a life sentence and me for graduating with honours. Armstrong tells the story of Azzy who at the start of the book is an outgoing teen part of The Young Team and all he cares about are his troops, drinking a bottle of Bucky and getting laid.

My parents have money, my parents are still together, I was encouraged to study, it was assumed that I’d be intelligent and academic, I was supported through school by teachers because I was seen as smart because I spoke “well”. It will view the world through his eyes as he navigates Scottish masculinity, gang violence, substance abuse, mental health, male suicide and murder. A quarter of the way through the novel we get a standard situation in which a teacher tells Azzy he sees potential in him, although the novel to this point has shown little evidence of this.Growing up in Lanarkshire myself, I could hear people I knew jumping out of the pages because the writing is so good. But, I grew up around, but thankfully never involved with the gangs and neds (non-educated delinquents) portrayed in the book, and I found it really difficult to sympathise with any characters in this book. I wouldn’t say I sanitised it, but I rewrote in a way that was more legible, and with an awareness of the fact that there would be people who would be reading this book and may struggle. Never read something that describes the west of Scotland so accurately and the situations you can find yourself in if you make the wrong choices.

That aside, where Trainspotting (which I also think is excellent) keeps a distance from the day to day, The Young Team is ultra-realistic, and goes into the minutiae of everyday life.
People were interested in my story and the authenticity but some were very hesitant to commit to a novel in that dialect. Though obviously influenced from Welsh's Trainspotting, the novel is a literary beast standing on its own two feet.
