There’s a sense of foreshadowing throughout the story, probably because I already know how witch trials went. However, the author handles her inability to speak deftly and weaves in such a detailed backstory for Martha, keeping the reader guessing if her guilt will swamp her, that when Martha does manage to act, her bravery is intensified.
