The Queen of Attolia: The magus tells Gen and Sophos that the queen of Attolia didn’t believe they had actually lost the Gift and was coming to question them herself.Series Moment: There is, of course, the reveal that Nahuseresh was not dead at all—that it was all part of the Attolians’ ploy to get Kamet out of his master’s household. Even when Gen stumbles upon the gods’ court of living statues in Hephestia’s temple, the scene is presented in flashes of movement and hints of contact rather than explicit interactions. The Magus of Sounis wants Gen to retrieve it from an underwater temple, since he has boasted that he "can steal anything. Inspired, he smashes the largest piece with the pry bar, revealing a hidden door and a staircase leading up.

Most of the books include in-universe mythology as well, with the manner of storytelling and its morals often reflecting one of the characters’ struggles. The magus and Sophos are sent home, but not before Sophos reveals a fledgling crush on the queen of Eddis.It felt like a prequel – setting us up for the real adventure, which I am very excited to read about.
