About this deal

When just two of the four hikers come back down from the mountain, the cops press the two for their story, however they soon become suspicious when their accounts do not add up. Quickly we find out that they have been relocated here under new identities in a witness protection programme. And to the top all this off, the book takes place in the Alps and I don’t think one of the characters knew a thing about hiking and this is coming from someone who is a hiker. But it's written surprisingly well, for the most part, and there was just enough mystery to keep me hanging on.

No real sense of intrigue and a plot that doesn’t get off the ground or bring much in the way of surprises. I think both sisters featured were pretty spiteful, awful people, who were happy to tell lies all their lives, so neither endeared themselves to me. Susi Holliday grew up close to Edinburgh and spent a number of years working in her family’s newsagent and pub before studying statistics and microbiology. Mark Billingham “Tense, creepy and utterly brilliant…” ―Jenny Blackhurst, author of The Hiking Path “A brilliant concept, superbly executed. As they head into the mountains, morale is high, but as the terrain turns treacherous, cracks in the relationships start to show. Honestly, i thought about dnf-ing several times, but i kept reading because it was such a short book. Regardless of that, and the fact that there were zero redeeming qualities about every character, it was a quick and entertaining read.

It’s different if you kill them for fun… I used to catch them in a jar and leave it next to a light. The Street’s plot premise is unique, not just in the premise but in how Susi Holliday structures it. You often know something is bubbling just beneath the surface of each character, and The Street, as a whole, but you won’t know what.

Overall, while I appreciated the strengths of The Street, I was ultimately left feeling disappointed by the characters and the lackluster plot. It was difficult to believe that these horrible people would ever vacation together when they hated each other so much. Anna and Peter start to doubt themselves, and are wondering what other secrets are hidden in The Street.

So when this mysterious stranger shows up, offering to prevent the deaths of the people that she loves, it sounds much too good to be true. The bot would send messages saying weird and intrusive things about something the person was just talking about, making everyone believe the app was listening to everything they said. But the character also has to come to terms with living inside their head and their book too much and that they have to “live again”.

Huge thanks to the author, Susi Holliday, for providing a digital copy of this title - via Netgalley - following her recent literary newsletter requesting early readers.
