The porters have to deal with a rodent infestation problem and unwisely turn to patient, Aidensfield wheeler-dealer Claude Greengrass, for advice, though he keeps hallucinating that spiders are crawling all over him. Julian Ovenden as Dr David Cheriton (series 1–3), a general practitioner (GP) and the series' original protagonist. Two cavers are brought into the Royal after an accident, but while Sister Brigid convinces one of them to stay on top of the diabetes they suffer from, Jill is left investigating a mysterious infection the other has. Natalie Anderson as Stella Davenport (series 4–7), a senior staff nurse and Frankie's longtime love interest. Gordon and Jill soon attend but make a shocking discovery that leaves one of them confused and horrified.

Jill performs an urgent hysterectomy on a young woman who an illegal abortion, while Matron tries to comfort her fiancé when he learns what happened.Gordon and Jill investigate the cause of a schoolboy's illness, and soon discover it is down to anxiety over his father's well-being following his mother's death. Safe as Houses - Ormerod and Weatherill accompany Brigid back to Ireland for Moira's funeral and uncover some shocking family secrets. Dr Ellis confronts local prejudice when he discovers one of his patients, a schoolgirl from China, contracted a rare disease there. No official news was given that the show was axed, but like Heartbeat, the series ended with a cliffhanger surrounding one of its main characters, when the final episode was aired on 31 July 2011.

Jill and Sister Brigid face a race against time to save a pregnant woman's child, even when all hope seems lost. The Royal is a British period medical drama, produced by Yorkshire Television (later part of ITV Studios), and broadcast on ITV from 2003 until its cancellation in 2011. A retired colonel dies before reaching hospital, but the body soon becomes a health concern after his method of suicide is uncovered. Jeff comes to the aid of a new mother who behaves oddly, only for Lucy to suspect she might be suffering from post-natal depression.
