I guess it was sort of well done—it’s almost so dark that all other aspects are hard to think about. Something about this story makes me a little sad that a man has written of the implications of a woman being raped, bearing her rapist’s baby, and choosing what to do about it (from the few options available).

Even the pious older woman of the village shows a level of support following a rape, saying the constable has a choice in the investigation, while the girl who was raped did not. I first read this when it was published in 2002 and decided to pick it for our book club this month as it has just been made into a film - and one I'll be making a point of seeing. The death of a baby is also shown and there are several attempts at suicide, one of which is successful, though this occurs off-screen. An elegantly old-fashioned period drama, The Road Dance is distinguished by striking cinematography and Hermione Corfield's breakout performance. This edition is releasing to celebrate the release of the award winning film adaptation, starring Hermione Corfield, Will Fletcher and Mark Gatiss and directed by Richie Adams.
