About this deal

This was the first time I read a book with a time setting and I found it so intriguing because as the hours went by, the plot thickened and the stress and anxiety levels went through the roof. Whether you're already a die-hard Agatha Christie fan, or you're just dipping your toes into the genre, I can guarantee that if you only remotely enjoy stories with red herrings and shocking reveals (and a healthy dose of murder on the side, of course) then you'll be in for an absolute treat with this absolutely engrossing whodunnit. A little less atmospheric and twisty than his debut and I had annoyingly pretty much worked out the killer and motive by the half way point due to a few very clunky clues.

The setting, too, is very Christie-esque and I liked the way the author made use of a 1920s themed murder mystery game to create a mystery within a mystery.

Whether is a classic Agatha Christie or a contemporary tale, such as The Thursday Murder Club or The Marlow Murder Club, as long a clever whodunnit. He is the author of A Fatal Crossing and now The Murder Game - which have both been inspired by masters of the crime genre such as Agatha Christie and Anthony Horowitz. To my knowledge I've never read a good old fashioned murder mystery like this before and now I'm craving more. Biography: Tom Hindle hails from Leeds and lives in Oxfordshire with his wife, a cat and two surprisingly cunning tortoises.

The characters are not especially likeable and I'm not sure there's a single one you can trust but they're all very well crafted. I enjoyed what I read of this more than the A Fatal Crossing, because it felt more focused and more clearly plotted. Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review. This makes it impossible for readers to grasp the full complexity of the narrative before its final reveal. Horowitz is a master of creating quite complex plotlines that always pull together in a very satisfying manner at the conclusion of the mystery. There is certainly plenty to like about "The Murder Game" and the influence of those aforementioned authors is plainly evident. I'm still getting over 'the smile slipped off his face like grease' and 'she felt panic skirting across her face'.

Many of the guests have plausible motives for the killing, and Hindle keeps us guessing before the dramatic reveal at the end of the story. The way the history of the area and the characters blended with the evening was cleverly done - little snippets of conversation adding to the mystery but never revealing too much.Reality starts to blend with the carefully orchestrated plot of the murder mystery, until guests no longer know what is real and what's made up.
