The last book I reviewed, for example, contains a beautiful poem about a girl who would like to release all her birthday balloons into the sky to celebrate the wind’s birthday. The winner of the Shadowers’ Choice Award for the Yoto Kate Greenaway Medal is The Midnight Fair (Walker Books ) illustrated by Mariachiara Di Giorgio – an illustrator, storyboard artist and concept designer from Rome, Italy – and written by Gideon Sterer.

Paying with acorns, flowers, and whatever else passes for currency in the natural kingdom, the animals indulge. Unsurprisingly, wordless books owe much of their existence to an increased comfort (at least on the part of Americans) with comics. His debut YA novel-in-verse, The Black Flamingo, won the prestigious Stonewall Book Award, won the Carnegie Shadowers’ Choice and was shortlisted for the YA Book Prize and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize. Gideon Sterer is the author of many books for children, including the New York Times best-selling The Christmas Owl, cowritten by Ellen Kalish and illustrated by Ramona Kaulitzki.From the comments below you can see that I was contacted by the author who was upset about my review, he has since apologised profusely and says he intended this to be a book about kindness to animals, I believe he did but sadly I feel this is a bad message. With stunning artwork that’s packed with clever secondary narratives to follow and characters to spot on each page, children will spend hours poring over these many hidden details. Salaam is a member of “the Exonerated Five” – the Black and Latino teenagers who were wrongly accused of assault and rape in the Central Park jogger case. Her books include A Late Freeze; Slow Storm; Refresh, Refresh (included in Best American Comics 2011); and The Undertaking of Lily Chen. Garoche’s drawings are impressively detailed, from the nest’s many small bits to the developing first feathers on the chicks and the wall smudges and exposed wiring of the renovation.

The Yoto Carnegie Greenaway Awards celebrate outstanding achievement in writing and illustration for children and young people respectively and are unique in being judged by librarians. Both winners gave powerful speeches at the ceremony sharing their passion about the freedom and connection that stories in all forms can provide young readers, and the paramount importance of children being allowed and encouraged to read whatever they choose.

If such a place exists, I hope that when they receive their copy of The Midnight Fair they put it in a spot of great honor. And some animals we never see here are present like wild boars, hedgehogs, and badgers, but it’s not overt. Now an objection was raised to this image on Goodreads, pointing out that this is exactly how you get invasive species in waterways and the book wasn’t setting a very good example. This serves a dual role – as a bookplate for a child to fill in their name and as an invitation to take an active role in the story.
