Rosie Andrews’s enormously enjoyable debut, The Leviathan, takes this familiar setup and makes of it something strange and original: part horror story, part fantasy, part historical mystery. It’s set in the same world as When We Were Birds and I’m delving down more explicitly into the idea of inheritance and houses. Growing up, she was aware that her home was unusual, but there were advantages; the grounds were beautiful, and after 6pm she and her sister had them to themselves. I worried a lot about this, and there were points writing Ruth’s story when I thought: I can’t do this, I can’t go back there, I can’t rehearse the emotions all over again, it’s too hard.

One of the reasons for that is because the pages are quite small so I feel like I’m making progress. As Esther’s conditions worsens and their father is suddenly taken by a stroke, something more sinister begins to surface; crashing down around Thomas’ life and drowning those in its wake. Creators have a responsibility to be accurate, especially when you’re black, but you can’t tell every single story in one story. I don’t think many people will pick up on the book as a commentary on global warming but that was strongly in my mind when I was writing.The sense of place is expertly built - this is so immersive you can feel and smell the atmosphere as you plunge into this world. Also, my mother just read all the time – she never watched television [and so] I didn’t watch television myself until I went to college.
