As coincidence would have it our old friend (and occasional CrimeReads contributor) Martin Edwards has his own Lake District-set series. Inspector Meredith is presented with what appears to be a suicide but which he very quickly realises is actually a murder disguised as a suicide. About two-thirds of the way through, the following line appears: "He realised, with a pang of hopelessness, that he still had a long way to go. The liveliest character is his wife who has enough personality to discourage their son from pursuing the police as a career.Described as a ‘fast-moving thriller’, The Fell Walker is based in the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands and Manila. She said a female taxi driver working for her had to swerve to avoid Mr Bird's car immediately after the first shooting. I bought it on the strength of the cover a 1930's Lake District travel poster and the fact that it was in Waterstones on a table marked " Dignified Detection " along with Dorothy Sayers and Agatha Christie . Police tonight revealed that 12 people had been shot by a cab driver who went on a bloody rampage in the Lake District before turning the gun on himself. Inspector Meredith’s quest for the truth behind the murder is inexhaustible and is quite often hard to follow. The Lake District Murder is from the British Library’s excellent Golden Age of Crime reissue project, which gives new life to a range of books from the 1920s and 1930s, all written by superb authors whose names are largely forgotten to our modern world. The focus was on the mechanics and technicalities of the investigation and seeing justice done for the victim. The immediate assumption is that Clayton has committed suicide, though Inspector Meredith becomes suspicious when he sees the tea laid out in the adjoining cottage. The readers did not feel as if they really knew these characters, or if they really wanted to get to know them. Some found the book to be a little drawn out, making the ending come a lot later than they thought it should.
