I liked the first half of the book which provided good insight into the trials and tribulations of Monty and Sarah during the late '80s and was engagingly written. All day I filmed amongst the seeds, knowing that I was not well, knowing that this was not good, knowing that if I let go, I might never put the pieces back together again. History When we bought this house in October 1991, the garden consisted of a 2 acre abandoned field out the back and a much smaller area in the front covered in builder’s rubble. It describes very well how gardening can become an all-consuming obsession, but what better way to heal than to reconnect with the Earth.

I've been watching "Gardener's World" on the BBC for several years now, and it main allure, aside from learning a great deal about gardening, is, of course, its main figure and chief gardener, Monty Don.

A chance bequest gave them enough money to put down a deposit on a house, and being (evidently) considerable risk-takers they went for an ancient, unrenovated farmhouse and two acres of field, near a river that turned out to be rather good at flooding. At the same time, "The Jewel Garden" is the story of a creative partnership that has weathered the greatest storm, and a testament to the healing powers of the soil. This is a used book - there is no escaping the fact it has been read by someone else and it will show signs of wear and previous use. The Spring garden was made to relish every possibility of the season and wave after wave of flower push forward culminating in mid May with the earliest species roses and the cow parsley which then takes over completely.

Monty is best known for his weekly column on the Daily Mail, as main presenter of BBC Gardeners' World.
