About this deal

The Hobbit is a great read-aloud for parents to share with children just as Tolkien shared the book with his children. The dramatic cover of the 75th-anniversary deluxe paperback edition of The Hobbit, which coordinates with the covers of new editions of the books in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, will appeal to older readers who want to collect a set of all of the books, one at a time. It is additionally quarterbound in green leather, with raised ribs on the spine, stamped in three foils on black cloth boards, and housed in a custom-built clothbound slipcase. Tolkien’s own selection of finished paintings and drawings have become inseparable from his text, adorning editions of The Hobbit for more than 85 years.

A deluxe edition of the book is coming out in the UK (no word yet on whether it will also come to the US). Shaun regularly speaks about adaptations of Tolkien's works and the future of Tolkien scholarship whilst passionately believing the Society needs to reach out to new audiences. Tolkien's stylized artwork includes five full-page spreads in color, as well as many others in black and green and Thor's map. In this unique enhanced edition of Tolkien’s enchanting classic tale, the full panoply of his art is reproduced for the first time, presenting more than 50 illustrations to accompany Bilbo Baggins on his adventure ‘there and back again’.

The hardbound book has an attractive green cover with gold lettering and a small illustration of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, on it.

The book includes 50 paintings, maps, and drawings made by Tolkien himself, and will be available in hardcover tomorrow, September 19. Not only that, but you'll pay nothing until the book is dispatched closer to the release day, so you've got time to change your mind if you need to. For the first time ever this new enhanced edition includes a full gallery of associated artwork, and is published in the same format as recent editions of The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion.

This 304-page large (approximately 8" X 10") paperback edition works well as a read-aloud, particularly for younger children who sometimes need more visual reinforcement of the text. It’s kind of fun that they started with the “illustrated” concept, and tried out to see what they could pull off by stretching the concept to its limits. We also have an exclusive look at one of Tolkien's illustrations from the book if you're interested in seeing more of it before securing the new edition.I hope they stop the Illustrated by the Author line here though, as they already had to stretch the definition of an illustration pretty thin for The Silmarillion and I don't think there is enough material left to fill another book after this release. In this unique enhanced edition of Tolkien’s enchanting classic tale, the full panoply of his art is reproduced for the first time, presenting a grand total of 50 illustrations to accompany Bilbo Baggins on his adventure ‘there and back again’. It's also quarterbound in green leather, with raised ribs on the spine, stamped in three foils on black cloth boards, and housed in a custom-built clothbound slipcase. This new edition of The Hobbit follows similar editions of Tolkien’s other books featuring the author’s hand-drawn maps and artwork. Lee, an award-winning British artist, has illustrated a number of Tolkien-related projects and books.
