About this deal

Eventually, though, the story gets going, with strong characterisation, a twisty plot and some great set-piece scenes. The Jacobite rebellions may have been crushed, but the King over the Water still has many supporters. Our features are original articles from our print magazines (these will say where they were originally published) or original articles commissioned for this site.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. The reading around the Jacobite cause and history has been very intense and there isn’t a happy ending to it. In some ways it was very personal because I was writing about where I’d been born and where I lived, and I was concerned about what local people would think of it as well. There are several dour Scots among the townsfolk, but Iain’s true nature is revealed in his rebellious singing at the Assembly dance. Most of the characters in the book are fictional, although many of them, as I discovered from the author’s note, are based on the lives and experiences of real people.

His father, whom he has not seen for years, a close confidante of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Teàrlach Eideard in Scots Gaelic) appears in Inverness. As I wrote the book, I could not shake off the consciousness of my father’s generation of native Highlanders whose lives had been blighted by having to go through a war of their own.Note: My thanks to NetGalley and Quercus Books for providing me with a free electronic copy of this book for review purposes.
