About this deal

Based on the most common needs of educators and librarians who work with young readers, these lists focus on new titles, as well as classics that are still in print and readily available for purchase. My aunt got this book for my son for his 3rd birthday and we read parts of it every single night for weeks now. Whether you're a novice or a seasoned children's programmer, this book gives you fresh programming ideas that foster lifelong literacy and love of reading. He studied at the Royal College of Art and worked for many years as a creative director at leading advertising agencies before becoming an author and illustrator.

The conversational, funny text is also full of facts that will astonish children and adults, and accompanied by Yuval Zommer's colorful illustrations. My five-year-old was perfectly attentive while my eight-year-old still found it absorbing and even I learned a few things. This book is packed with tidbits of facts and explanations about creepy-crawlies--mostly insects, but also a variety of other invertebrates like slugs and worms. Unlike other programming guides, this one uses a developmental approach with literature-based activities fitted to specific learning needs.

Highly recommend, even though it does have a few notes on the American cockroach, and my boys (having discovered my disgust of that bug) are now obsessed with that particular page.

I would have given this five stars if it had included a Bibliography and suggestions for further reading and study. The illustrations are fun and colorful, but close enough to the real thing kids should be able to identify specimens in real life after reading this. The book divides the insects into groups, and includes moths and butterflies, beetles, ants, spiders, snails and all manner of creepy crawlies, their habitats, habits and life-cycles. Young entomologist will find delight in the words and illustrations; this is truly a beautiful book.
