About this deal

This brilliant author, Jan-Philipp Sendker, has gifted us with a story that is so powerful and moving. It would be tremendously improved if the protagonist started running around beating people up with amazing martial arts moves using his cane. The story moves slowly enough to capture every picturesque detail of the town with its market and dirt roads, the monastery where Tin Win was educated and where he first encounters Mi Mi and her heartbeat, the trees and lakes around which Tin Win felt most comfortable, and most of all, the blind young Tin Win and Mi Mi the love of his life, the girl with underdeveloped feet. I finished The Art of Hearing Heartbeats in a flood of tears, emotionally connected to the main protagonists.

As though bestowing a renewed power of sight, U Ba paints for Julia a hitherto unseen portrait of her father as a young man, which Julia supplements with her own memories. Tin Win hears “buzzing and blowing, chirping and cheeping, rushing and rumbling” but it is seldom more excitingly conveyed. When, later on in the book, they are (inevitably) separated, Tin Win, even with his awesome superpowers, completely loses his ability to do much of anything, because all these years of being blind obviously didn't teach him to test his environment in a cautious and independent manner. In reality Julia is going to need lots of therapy for her abandonment issues, but maybe that is the sequel?Upon arriving in her father’s birthplace, Julia is astonished to encounter a strange man who has waited four years to share her father’s complete, intriguing story. As one dazzling miracle follows another, and the love between Tin Win and Mi Mi grows, Sendker strays perilously close to imitating the cod mysticism and fortune-cookie sentiment of a Paulo Coelho novel.

Tin carries Mi Mi on his back, and she leads him through the village, telling him what he is hearing along the way. But in the end you will feel like a better person for having experienced a love story that spans ages, continents, cultures and families. If the locations are not okay to be set up for film shooting, the crew will build a whole new set, he added. There she uncovers a tale of unimaginable hardship, resilience, and passion that will reaffirm the reader’s belief in the power of love to move mountains. The author frequently resorted to long-winded lists of unanswerable questions, such as, "What do we know about our parents, and what do they know about us? I was lost and confused by the shifts within the story (which was further hindered by the narrator's monotone voice). In fact, the two are so much in love that, whenever they are separated for any period of time, Tin Win becomes terminally ill.

If the reader has any experience in a Southeast Asian country, the descriptions trigger unforgettable memories. but I think that the book would have worked better for me if we heard this story either from Julia's father directly or from an omniscient narrator because then I wouldn't have to stop myself from thinking "He couldn't possibly know that! This short book by Jan-Philipp Sendker is a profound story about the true meaning of love, a wake-up for us all in this rather jaded world in which we live. Although the novel is ostensibly being narrated by Julia, her encounter with U Ba is really a framing device for him to tell Tin Win’s romantic story: After his father dies and his mother deserts him on his sixth birthday, Tin Win is raised lovingly by his widowed aunt Su Kyi, but by ten years old he has gone blind. A successful Burmese lawyer in a New York City firm, she can't understand his choice to abandon his American life.
