About this deal

After Charles Tanqueray died in 1868, his son Charles Waugh Tanqueray took over at the tender age of 20.

The distillery on Goswell Road was rebuilt after the war ended and began to expand into the surrounding area.

Back in the 1860s, Tanqueray creator Charles Tanqueray visited the orange groves of Spain and eventually produced a gin recipe based around the glory of Seville oranges.

Meanwhile Charles’ brother Edward married Susan, the granddaughter of Alexander Gordon, another noted London distiller whose name might be familiar. The standard expression based around juniper, coriander, angelica root, and liquorice, and now bottled at 43.The Gordon and Tanqueray families had long been close and in 1899 Charles Gordon and Charles Waugh Tanqueray (Charles was clearly a very popular name in Victorian England) decided to merge the two distilleries In 1899 they formed a new company Tanqueray, Gordon and Co. A perfect balance of refreshing juniper, peppery coriander, aromatic angelica and sweet liquorice gives Tanqueray London Dry its unique and classic taste. Nowadays Tanqueray offers a full range of gins including the popular Flor de Sevilla orange gin, a zero ABV offering, and Malacca that harks back to one of Charles Tanqueray’s original recipes from 1830. In 1922 the company was bought by the Scotch giant Distillers Company, the owners of Johnnie Walker and Dewars.

The pineapple fruit was the ultimate symbol of hospitality in 1830s England and features in the Tanqueray family crest which adorns every bottle from the Tanqueray Distilling Company. Officially re-launched in the beginning of 2013, Tanqueray's limited edition Malacca is a sweet, spicy gin with increased levels of citrus. It boasts a phenomenally fruity, spicy palate with big zesty, citrusy top notes, using the same Tanqueray recipe since 1830 of Tuscan juniper, angelica, and coriander. It won't fit through a letterbox, but it will bring bundles of joy to those who like floral, citrus-forward gins. Tanquray used to be 46% ABV, then Gordons watered it down to 43%, now seemingly 41 1/2%, no longer an “Export” Gin in my view, nor so suitable for very dry Martini. Following the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, Tanqueray expanded rapidly into the US opening a distillery in New Jersey. Give your Christmas tree a hearty helping of wonderful juniper tastiness with Drinks by the Dram's Gin Baubles. Tanqueray London Dry is still made today with the same combination of botanicals with a perfect balance of refreshing juniper, peppery coriander, aromatic angelica and sweet liquorice. Tanqueray London Dry is one of the most awarded gins in the world and is still made today to the same classic recipe as when it was first created by Charles Tanqueray in 1830.

The secret of this spirit lies in the zesty bittersweet taste of Seville oranges balanced with the complexity of a Tanqueray London Dry Gin. David Tanqueray was a Protestant, or Huguenots as they were known, who fled his home in Normandy and came to London to escape religious persecution.
