About this deal

Most prime (single focal length) telephoto lenses can accept and work well with teleconverters to extend their reach, but at the expense of shutter speed due to the smaller effective aperture when a teleconverter is employed. The gasket is pretty short though, so I hope Sigma will make it a tad longer in the future, similar to what Nikon does to make it more useful. Sigma uses its HSM technology for autofocus on its Sigma-, Nikon- and Canon-mount versions of this lens; Pentax and Sony users are limited to mechanical focusing strategies. When shooting wildlife or sports where things are happening quickly, I can imagine a situation, where I will miss a shot because I focused in the wrong direction and by the time I corrected, the moment had passed. On the lens, there are two marks serving as 90-degree rotation marks for landscape and portait orientations, but if you want to align the lens in a counter-clockwise position you'll have to use the ''Sigma EX'' logo as a reference point.

Compared to the previous version, Sigma states that this model is dust and splash-proof, but not fully waterproof – more like "weather-sealed. VR II lens, it confused my camera into thinking that the maximum aperture of the lens was still at f/2. Sigma has surprised us in the past, producing inexpensive lenses which perform very well even when used wide open. Even at f16 this lens still delivered loads and loads of gorgeous bokeh when the subject was at the the closest focusing distance of 250cm / 98. You can change this behavior with a USB dock and set one of the custom modes on the lens to speed priority, in which case the speed of the lens will greatly increase, but the accuracy will drop.In the final analysis it could come down to a situation where, if you're going to shell out that much for a lens, is it worth it to go the extra mile and get a lens which performs that much better? Please give it a year and in the meanwhile use your Canon or Nikon designed for mirrorless 300mm F2,8 with build in 1. That’s a pretty big difference in reach, I would say roughly equivalent to 80-100mm of focal length loss at close distances. The following example demonstrates how close you can get to your subject, in this case a Compact Flash memory card. Those are coming from people who have not photographed the kind of situations in which these lenses are used.

Unless you are desperate or in the business so you can right it off, I wouldn't be investing hugely in Sony glass right off the bat. The three aperture screws on the back k-mount ring came loose out there in Tanzania on the rough Landrover.

G Master OSS, both of which we’ve found to be incredibly fast and sharp, as is to be expected from Sony’s high-end G Master lineup. To be clear though, it does not focus as fast, although close, and it is softer in the corners than the Canon, and a big deal to some is it does not have IS. Sony is a master at spinning out new models with almost everything you'd like, carefully leaving some enhancements on the shelf for the next body.
