I’m not even completely sure it was an official Seiko model, or someone just modified a previous existing Seiko with the SNXS79 dial, but I love it all the same. While many of us might not need such an apparatus on our watch, one that our phones can likely do better for us non-divers, I like using it to time how much time is left for food in the oven, or how much time I have left in a parking meter.

The sunburst grey of the dial lightens up when viewed head-on, but darkens and has an almost visually ‘glossy black’ appeal at an angle.The included Jubilee bracelet is one of the most solid I’ve ever worn, and I’ve tried dozens of third-party Jubilees from companies like Strapcode for watches like my SKX.

The crown at the 4:00 position certainly helps to add to the comfort, but I’ll admit, it’s such a tiny crown, it can be difficult to pull out and use.

There are also some similar Seiko 5 variants you may want to consider if you’re already looking at the SNXS79. On one of the off-days in the city, grandpa bought two Seiko 5s, one for himself, and one for my father. It is a ‘smaller’ case size (37mm in diameter) and is maybe even smaller than average by modern day standards. If you want a watch that’s a bit more rugged and tough, it’s hard to beat a field watch like the SRPG35.

I’m a practical person and don’t give a rat’s arse about status symbols, I like things that are a reasonable cost to purchase, reliable and long lasting. At only 37mm in diameter, and 11mm thick, the SNK355 sits close to the wrist, making it an extremely dressy-looking piece that is just screaming to be worn on an exotic leather strap like a crocodile or lizard. They are still in production, however, Seiko has no longer released any new 37mm original Seiko ‘5’ badge models. If you like the grey dial, but prefer the polished bezel and metal bracelet, the SRPE51 has all of the above. Instead, Seiko is releasing new Seiko 5 Sports watches, such as their SRPD 5KX dive watch, SRPE DressKX, SRPG field watch, and SRPH29 pilot watchmodels.Seiko is known for generally having very strong lume on their watches, but some of the Seiko 5 models fall short in this area.
