About this deal

I’ve read your blog on using RIC, but have you now moved away from this approach towards what you’ve entitled: ‘ A new method? It was very hard to follow in some places as it jumped between scenes quite a lot and some of the words were very difficult to say and understand. Your class will extract a definition for each Latin word based on the information and context provided in the story. My favourite character is perilus as he is kind but also does mad things and always gets himself into funny situations.

He soon heard and wanted to come in and share his wise words with us so that we could use his quotes within our biographies. I have been reading the Romans on the Rampage and I have enjoyed the book very much but sometimes found it a little confusing. Lots of the characters have amusing names - like Hysteria, who always cries, or Fibbus Biggus, the man who accuses the father of fraud.I think that the book is realistic because it was about the Romans and they liked to charriot race and also kept slaves to do things for them. There's loads of ups and downs in this like there are slaves but on the other hand birds don't speck so its equal and so some of it is like the history of Rome but also other bits which aren't. This book did make me want to learn more about this period of history because of the chariot racing. By the time he was twenty-one he was writing stories for children, and quickly realized that he loved writing funny stories and making people laugh. Jeremy Strong’s is good book for 11 and over because it has quite hard words in and you’ve got to keep up with the story because it adds on lots of information like words in Latin.

I met with Jess, our Y5 leader who is in charge of reading, to discuss how to move forward with whole-class reading in our school. Your KS2 class will read the sentences taken from chapter 1 of ‘Romans on the Rampage’ insert and provide the reason for the use of each apostrophe. The aim of this new method is to expand pupils' vocabulary and deepen their understanding of the texts they are reading. I can’t imagine what it would be like being a child reading it to myself, maybe it would have awakened a performer in me, maybe it would have irritated me. I really enjoyed this book because it is really funny and adventurous it makes you want read more and more.

We then wanted to understand where the Romans came in the world’s history, so we made a human timeline outside to get our bearings of where the Romans were in history. Did you know that the Romans used goats instead of horses when they were first learning to ride chariots as they are easier to control! I think ‘Romans on the Rampage: Chariot Champions’ is an amazing book with funny parts in all the pages! Perilus is only 11 and likes to get up to mischief which is probably why he wants to be a charioteer, one of the most dangerous jobs in the Roman economy. Quizzes are used regularly for retrieval practice, to remind children of what they have previously learned about words and the text.
