About this deal

Instant cameras aren’t renowned for their clarity, and the OneStep+ doesn’t do much to improve that reputation. You can get really creative with the double exposure and light painting modes, and the remote trigger is rapid too.

Step into the world of analog instant photography with a little help from the Polaroid OneStep Plus. It has adjustable focus, a clip-on close-up attachment and takes impressively sharp images, but film packs are among the most expensive and it lacks the more advanced functions advanced photographers might expect. The Fujifilm Instax Mini 40 is essentially the same camera, but in a nicer body for only slightly more money. You'll want to use the distant setting for most shots, but when leaning in toward a subject you'll want to use the single-person setting. Despite many ups and downs since the original company’s demise in 2001, the brand has retained both recognition and reputation. Finally, there's a full manual exposure mode, with control over shutter speed, aperture, and flash power. That said, the new i-Type colour film is a significant improvement, not just in terms of the shorter development time and reduced susceptibility to direct light exposure post-camera, but also the image quality, notably both the colour saturation and the contrast. Whether its digital or film or digital and film Australian Camera magazine's primary focus is to help its readers choose and use the tools they need to create memorable images, and to enhance the skills that will make them better photographers.

The original Polaroid OneStep was one of the biggest selling cameras of the 1970s and the new camera replicates the retro shooting experience brilliantly. But casual snappers should look to an instant film format that's less expensive and easier to work with. The former is identified with icons showing a tree and two figures, while the latter shows a single figure.Perhaps more importantly though, it’s the continued improvements in the film products – now more certain than before – that are likely to make this and any future Polaroid Original cameras something more than just nostalgic curiosities. The OneStep+ is every bit the homage to Polaroid’s ’70s-era original, with chunky styling that’s full of retro charm. Pop open the tray, slide in a film pack (each one has clear directions so you don’t get them back to front) and close it up.

You won't have to stretch your arms as far for selfies, and you can get in a little closer when making portraits. While it might be more expensive than its rivals, the Bluetooth additions make it a lot more flexible, too. Unlike the revolutionary SX-70 camera (introduced in 1972) which had a novel folding design, the OneStep was rigid-bodied to reduce manufacturing costs and make it easier to use.Power came from an ultra-slim, six volt battery – another piece of Polaroid engineering genius – housed in each SX-70 film pack, an arrangement that was continued with the later Type 600, Spectra, Captiva and Vision films.
