About this deal

The children could use the tips such as the scratch test and the guidance for observing rocks to decide which type of rock the pebble in their pocket is. Despite this, it would still be a useful addition to the classroom in the sense that it might spark an interest in history or geography in some children. It’s written in the first person and from the perspective of a young child, which would help to draw in the reader. I like how on each page you can see the pebble in each illustration even the most detailed illustrations. This is a wonderfully factual account of the journey made by one tiny pebble over 480 million years of earth’s history.

The Pebble in My Pocket by Meredith Hooper, Chris Coady

Our greater depth results have never been so high, and I know this is down to ‘Take One Book’ and the ‘Reading Gladiators’ – programmes that are planned and provided by this amazing company. It would also be very useful for children that are interested in geology and the history of the earth. However, it would be an excellent book to refer to in the humanitarian subjects to touch on erosion and how a rock travels. This series of conversations with high profile authors is designed for teachers and librarians interested in reading and children’s books.Next the children are asked to take on the role of palaeontologists looking at fossil evidence, piecing fossils together. As soon as I opened it, I was like that's too many words, I don't want to read all those so I can imagine students having the same thought.

I am hoping to immerse the children in the Stone Age with a variety of fiction and then setup a 'Book World Cup' to find our next pleasure read. It tells the dynamic story of rock formation; showing the reader the processes that the pebble goes through from its beginnings in a fiery volcano 480 million years ago - how it is moulded by fire, then shaped by erosion. The detailed language, accompanied by the pictures, really does manage to 'walk' you through both the planets history and this journey that the pebble has embarked on just to get to where it is today. I thought it was good for use in history and geography lessons as it can be used as a starter or as a plenary activity. It's a wordy book - several times more words than an average picture book, but the story and pictures are engaging and held my son's interest really well.

I would say that it is too much information to read to children in one go unless they are considerably older, maybe around 11 years of age. This video presented by Professor Alice Roberts is full of useful information for teachers planning work around fossils. i can not open the flipchart file as we are on smart and the program says it is an old file type that can not be converted. There is a very useful timeline at the back of the book, too, which can help the reader to appreciate when the different events have occurred in relation to one another. I didn't particularly enjoy reading this book as it is very factual about the journey of a pebble made over 480 million years ago through earths history.

Furthermore the animals which are illustrated throughout the book are typical of the times in history being described on each page; this would add further weight to class discussions and activities. A factual text blended with literary language and illustrated with cross-hatched pictures in earthy colours. The power points I believe were from Twinkl or other users on TES so I wasn't able to include them in my upload. Meredith Hooper is an historian by training and the author of many books, ranging in subject from Antarctica to aviation, from the history of water to the history of inventions.
