I never watched the film because I thought it would be too scary/violent for me, though I imagined I would love the fairy tale aspects of it. Their tents and trucks were everywhere, filling the wide yard surrounded by stables, a barn, and the mill itself. That is what you must feel every time you grow weak—when you try to forget that you serve your fatherland and your station in life.

Mercedes seemed so strong, like someone who would protect her in this house filled with loneliness and the ghosts of the past. The mythological and the real are set in tension with one another, coexisting in the world of the film from the very start. Ofelia's father, the king of the underworld, says this at the end of the film as she's transformed from a dying girl on earth into a princess in her father's kingdom. At one time the table on which they’d spread their map used to serve meals to the miller and his family.

However, in 1944, she is given new life as a young mortal girl, Ofelia, who is traveling with her pregnant but sickly mother, Carmen, to live with Carmen's new husband, a ruthless Francoist soldier named Vidal. The little creature was so fast that Ofelia soon stumbled over her own feet as she chased her, dropping all her books. The world of the labyrinth allows her an escape from the mundane reality of society and the world her mother has entered, and as Carmen tells her she is disappointed in her for dirtying the green dress, Ofelia can only smile, considering the adventure she has ahead of her.
