I feel like some actions were brushed off a little too easily towards the end and, while I appreciate a neat and happy ending, I would have loved for some more… well, realization of their toxic and bad behaviour overall, too. I had to keep reminding myself they were 18-ish, but it never did stick, because they felt 15-ish to me. More likely a recipe for heartbreak when you take into consideration that Will isn't out and even worse likes to share a homophobic joke or two with his jock friends. i think the story does a decent job at representing the LGBT community, normalising being plus-sized, combating harmful stereotypes, expressing grief and the loss of a loved one, and showing the joys of liking someone. But I couldn't get invested in them as a couple -- possibly because of how they came across as 15 rather than 18.

But Ollie's relationship with Will was great, and when Ollie's Californian family stays in North Carolina to help his sick aunt, he hopes that the fling can continue if only Will would text him back. Only Mostly Devastated is very much characters-focused and with Ollie as the narrator, for the most part it shows everything through his eyes, making him seem like the person who has the moral high ground.

I felt so much for Ollie because someone so young should never be thrown into a parenting role but life sucks and it does happen. Also, Ollie's friends from California were barely mentioned and I honestly forgot all about them until the end of the book when he brought them up again. If you liked Donna’s (and her mother’s) romances abroad, especially Harry Headbanger’s spontaneous summer storyline, pick up Hot British Boyfriend. S. details right in this Grease reboot, creating an inclusive cast and giving weight to many parts of Ollie's multifaceted life, including his aunt's illness, the cousins he babysits, and his friendships. There were so many things about Only Mostly Devastated that reminded me of Simon VS so if you’re looking for a second Simon VS then here it is.

IF THIS GETS (co-written with Cale Dietrich) is forthcoming in Fall 2021 from Wednesday Books / Macmillan. I really wanted to enjoy this but I found the story to be unimaginative, the plot to be uneventful and—with the exception of Ollie and Will—every single character struck me as being little more than a stand-in for a certain issue.

It’s definitely a kind of novel I want to read when I’m feeling a little bit down, when I want to laugh (honestly, Ollie is hilarious! I think one of the most wonderful things about Only Mostly Devastated is the way it discusses the complexities of relationships, romance and sexuality, both with the main character’ story and a side character’s story. The diverse supporting cast—particularly Ollie's new trio of female friends—is so richly characterized that readers will swear they bump into these girls in the halls every day. But if they keep accidentally ripping your heart out over and over again, doesn't mean they're terrible people, but it probably means you're better off getting to a distance where they can't keep doing that.

I loved Ollie's love for music and his family - it truly rounded out his character and endeared him so much more. The romance was really interesting to follow, just as well, with its confusing moments, misunderstandings and growth. Aunt Linda's health gets worse, and she can definitely do with her family support and Ollie's babysitting while she is doing her chemotherapy.
