About this deal

This just comes to show that readers’ interpretations sometimes diverge from what the picturebook maker intended, and that each reading experience is unique. The story is about a young boy who is told by his mother that they have to leave their home because it’s not safe anymore. It’s a story which asks children from a safe, comfortable background to think about what it must be like to leave your home and make a journey into the unknown. The attitude of the tabloid press to people in trouble disgusted me and I wanted to do what ever I could to counter it.

There's something for all types of children, what's important is that they all show tales beyond the familiar. The text is simplistic, presenting this difficult concept in an accessible way, allowing those living in difficult circumstances to have their stories heard, seen, supported, and understood. It’s a preschool book, so it’s a hit light on what it’s actually like to be a refugee but it’s sad and hopeful and encourages children to think about how they’d cope with being away from everything they loved and hopefully teach them a bit of empathy. My Name is Not Refugee is an incredibly powerful picture book aimed at both children and kids alike. This experience has been fantastic primarily for the children, the school and also for me (professionally).

I loved how the mom took her time to explain everything to the little boy, held him tight, hugged him a lot, and made sure he was knowledgeable about the journey. I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly!Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example.

This PowerPoint will support children’s learning and understanding by giving them definitions and helpful explanations. Now - with Russia's ongoing aggression against their neighbours - half of my extended family have been refugees for the past seven years. No one wants to be in their shoes, and no one thinks they'll ever be put in that situation until they find themselves in it. My Name is Not Refugee is a powerful book, and I was keen to find out more about how its creation, and was delighted that Kate Milner agreed to answer a few questions to give some insight in the creation of the book.

You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods. I was very, very pleased to be shortlisted but I explained to everyone at the time that there was absolutely no chance of me winning. Refugee Action Colchester is a voluntary organisation working with refugees, asylum seekers and people with no access to public funds.Milner's great strength comes in her restraint; the text is poised and quiet, simply rendering the events with a sort of matter of fact air. There are lots of questions in the book that make you think about how that journey must feel and which decisions you would make if you were in the boy’s place.
