If you're curious about packing light, these are the travel accessories I trust to simplify my travel plans and sidestep waste. The material is water-resistant which means you shouldn’t have to worry about soggy clothes on a rain-filled trip, but perhaps go for another option if you know you’ll be getting drenched. As we’ve mentioned, colours don’t add anything to quality, but there’s something wonderful about the brightness of this packing cube, which made the whole packing process somehow more enjoyable. The heaviest and widest packing cubes ought to be at the bottom of the suitcase, leaving room for smaller cubes to be arranged around and on top. The bags’ squishiness means they can be squeezed into corners and fitted around other items, and a full mesh exterior meant we were still able to quickly see (and access) the contents.

The range of packing cubes on the market is quite overwhelming, so we’ve gathered together the best of the bunch here, with options and sizes for all needs. Generous zips (on three sides of each cube) mean easy access, and although we’re aware this next factor has zero effect on performance, we loved the bright-orange hue. Packing cubes almost always come in multi-pack sets, which usually range between three and six pieces.But don’t assume it’s a case of style over substance – these cubes are great examples of ones packed with features that are often skipped.

Even the shortest of trips will benefit from the strategic space-saving of compressing your possessions into as tight a space as possible, leaving more space for souvenirs, or just reducing the need for larger baggage. You can also get waterproof cubes, which are great for adding an extra layer of protection for tech, documents, and other fragile items. Having the option between the two is useful (although maybe not necessary for everyone) and makes travelling more comfortable.

Full disclosure – initially, we didn’t really see the point of adding handles to packing cubes, until we realised they’re a godsend when it comes to extricating said packing cubes from our (usually overpacked) suitcase. The top and bottom have a mesh front panel, allowing you to see what’s inside, ideal for when you’re trying to find toothpaste or some Tums after a long travel day. That being said, the mesh lid on the cubes is made from polyester, so one side won’t be as protected as the others.

In a nutshell, it’s rigid, stylish and allowed ridiculously easy access to the contents (and, trust us, we’d crammed a lot into it). These holsters hold everything in place: shampoo and conditioner bottles; toothpaste; nail clippers; gauze; Vaseline; tubes of medicine; mouthwash; you name it. The Elephant Box Water Bottle has an 800ml capacity, which keeps water cool and sees me through a couple of hours.

We considered all aspects, whether it was the construction (we’re particularly keen on double and compression-style zips), rigidity (useful when it comes to more delicate items), and internal features, such as inner pockets. Further, the way the hook attaches to the case itself is well done, thanks to a rugged piece of fabric and strong stitching. In a crowded market of travel cases and toiletry bags, you’d be hard-pressed to find something better. This cube has less rigidity than others in this round-up, but we found this to be a huge bonus – its squishiness came in incredibly useful when squashing in extra items of clothing (we’re notorious over-packers).On road trips, I feel a little rude listening to podcasts or audiobooks, however, on noisy trains and flights, earphones are a lifesaver for avoiding the chaos around you. Each cube features a sturdy zip system that lets you compress them into a more travel-friendly size, while the firm carry handles make for easy transportation. Together, the features provide excellent utility in a small package that punches well above its weight.
