About this deal

The finish on the cards is super smooth, with a high gloss finish which makes the cards quite slippery and (in spite of the density of the deck) easy to shuffle. Witchcraft and magick have once again entered the zeitgeist, with more and more people discovering the positives of the practice, based around ideas of connection, communion with nature and love.

First published in 2019 by Liminal 11, The Modern Witch Tarot is a diverse, contemporary take upon the traditional tarot inspired by fashion and modern witches from the everyday walk of life.Giving to others in need won’t be a stressor for her, and confidently offers gifts of her choosing to others. Once I got my hands on the Modern Witch Tarot deck, I was immediately impressed with the artwork and inclusive imagery. While the depictions of technology may put some readers off, I really like how it reflects the kind of witches and Tarot readers that exist in the world right now. Included within The Modern Witch Tarot are two extra cards, Lisa has added a footnote at the end of her guidebook explaining that some readers may wish to exchange the ten of swords for her alternative cards ‘Everything Is Fine’.

It’s a wonderful way of underlining the very important concept that we all possess both energies and we draw from both at different times. The Modern Witch Tarot cards feature bluey-turquoise and white backs which include imagery of the four suits alongside what appears to be an eye in the centre of the card surrounded by what could either be an ‘M’ or a ‘W’ dependent upon which way up the card sits. However it should be noted that it is still a cardboard box and eventually will sustain damage if it is treated roughly. This passed down to Parra and her mother, who incorporate their own magical rituals and practices into their day-to-day lives.Lisa Sterleis an artist from Columbus, Ohio, with work spanning from comic books to concept design to pop-culture-fueled illustration.

The box is predominantly white and printed with images from the deck, as well as a brief descriptor of the Modern Witch Tarot, and publisher’s details. The Modern Witch Tarot deck aims to celebrate diversity and help us to connect with the practice of Tarot. My personal practice involves a lot of communion with the spirit of Gaia [the Mother Earth goddess]. It has inclusive and diverse illustrations of all kinds of women, femmes, and the gender fluid, wearing modern fashion and up-to-date styles, yet keeps the flavour of the Rider-Waite imagery.

Crystal Magic for the Modern Witch presents detailed information on 100 crystals, gems, and metals, covering everything from their physical, mental, and spiritual benefits to vibrational keywords and origin countries. The black and white printed guidebook includes a forward and introduction section followed by a single page for each of the major arcana cards outlining their definition and meaning, a paragraph to explain each of the minor arcana cards, a double page spread offering guidance upon carrying out readings, a section upon sample spreads and a final note offering direction upon the two extra cards included within the deck. The name of the card is also written at the bottom, making the deck great for beginners who are getting to know Tarot. While some might see it as being somewhat akin to 'comic book’ art, the images don't have the tedious homogeneity of comics – every character depicted is unique with subtle details defining their appearance and expression. I’m sure that at some moment in our lives, we all get to a point where ‘enough is enough’ and Lisa felt that she was at her lowest when she was reminded of ‘the ten of swords’– the tarot card signifying defeat and woe.

As black Tarot readers and creators have had a huge influence on the practice over the years but are often overlooked, it was great to see a person of color as the main focus on the box. The Hierophant traditionally wears three layers of clothing to represent the conscious, the subconscious, and the super-conscious mind. Her great grandmother was a witch, a curandera (a traditional folk healer) from Oaxaca, in southern Mexico, who people in the community would turn to when they needed healing in matters of the body and spirit. My father, a reform rabbi, and my mother, from the Jewish community in Mexico City, both encouraged my obsession with the spiritual from a young age. End of book instructions for card care and storage, preparing for a reading, framing a question, and layout.
