About this deal

Will joined the GameRadar+ team in August 2021 and has written about service titles, including Fortnite, Destiny 2, and Warzone, as well as some of the biggest releases like Halo Infinite, Elden Ring, and God of War Ragnarok. They’re how you interface with the battlefield, yes, but also how you exert creative agency over the tactical experience. Your Tank choice should draw fire away from allies with Taunt, have good self-healing, or methods of generating Block to protect themselves – Captain Marvel makes for an excellent tank hero, but Blade’s self-healing can make him very resilient too. It’s also worth mentioning that the Hunter is required for story missions, and sometimes so are other heroes, but in general missions, you can choose any of your unlocked heroes. For me, while the dazzle of hanging out with established Avengers is cool, it’s the relatively young Midnight Suns that shine brightest.

It makes them a bit of a jack-of-all-trades character, but this versatility means you can really tailor the Hunter’s card deck to suit any mission and team composition. Firaxis got the most it could from the license and made the deepest, most interesting Marvel game to date.

Take the studio that rebooted XCOM to stunning results, merge it with a card-battle system inspired by titles such as Slay the Spire and Inscryption, then add in the Marvel superheroes that have defined the last 15 years of pop culture. It runs as smoothly as you’d hope, without long loading times between The Abbey and Limbo (and Limbo and your mission), and without any stuttering during combat when anything particularly VFX heavy happens – which is quite a lot of the time. In the tutorial missions, you’ll get to play as Doctor Strange, Iron Man, and Captain Marvel, but on your first missions as the Hunter, you’ll bring along Doctor Strange and Blade, for example.

Find out just how successfully Firaxis shuffles the deck with our Marvel’s Midnight Suns review for PS5. Marvel’s Midnight Suns introduces The Hunter – a bespoke character that Firaxis Games designed with Marvel – who has been resurrected by the other Midnight Suns to help in the battle against Lilith. Let the heroes get too battered and they incur injuries that hamper their abilities for a couple of in-game days, effectively shelving them in a similar manner to XCOM’s injury system. After that, you’ll unlock the rest of the core Midnight Suns members for missions, and other heroes, such as Spider-Man, will get recruited to the team through the story. Midnight Suns sees the creation of an entirely new character in the Marvel universe known as The Hunter.Various healing cards can keep themselves and others in the fight, or a range of Knockback-focused attacks allow for decent damage, particularly if the environment can be used effectively. It’s balanced beautifully, and I constantly felt the desire to learn more about where the stories being told were going. You play three cards every turn, kill a few grunts, and maybe take out a bigger foe with some extended effort. You could say the combat encounters are the simplification of XCOM’s toolset, but I’d say they are on par for tactical depth when you really get to grips with Midnight Suns’ rulesets. Everything is on the front foot in battle, with your team eschewing cover and getting hit a given, so Midnight Suns’ combat is the embodiment of the phrase ‘the best defense is a good offense’.
