Adenosine‐loaded dissolving microneedle patches to improve skin wrinkles, dermal density, elasticity and hydration, Int J Cosmet Sci 2018, 40: 199–206. While peptides work on skin rejuvenation, hyaluronic acid travels beneath the skin’s surface to provide a more nourished look. In traditional microneedling, needle size is a major factor factor in the treatment’s effectiveness.
As well as delivering active ingredients, there’s also some evidence that the microneedles themselves can be beneficial, much like how solid microneedles can stimulate the skin to repair itself. Subconjunctival and retrobular injections can provide rapid or prolonged release, depending on the composition of the formulation.
These systems can be used to deliver liquid drug formulations to deeper skin layers, depending on the length of the needles [141]. Gentle but effective, the high-performing active ingredients in these patches penetrate the skin through a whopping 2,600 self-dissolving pyramid-shaped microcrystals, pushing product deep into the skin for visible results. Also, silicon is a brittle, non-compatible, and non-biodegradable material, which may cause skin irritation if the needles break and are deposited in the tissue [117,118].
Moreover, biodegradable polymers such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA) [129], poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) [130], and poly(lactic- co-glycolic)acid (PLGA) [131] are widely investigated as microneedle materials. Among the ophthalmic preparations, the most commonly used are eye drops [49-51], ointments [52,53], or gels [54,55], containing the drug in a dissolved or suspended form [56,57]. The wet etching process uses a potassium hydroxide solution, while dry etching includes the physical methods ion milling and sputtering and the chemical method high-pressure plasma [156]. The active ingredient is deposited in the tissue pierced with the microneedles during the application. Vice Reversa currently have two products: Pimple Patches and Plumping Patches, containing active ingredients targeted for treating acne and decreasing fine lines and wrinkles, respectively.
The plumping patches contain popular and effective actives like peptides and adenosine, which can penetrate deeper into skin than other anti-aging products. Inserts can be divided into soluble (biodegradable or bioerodible) and insoluble (therapeutic systems) [77,78].
It is also important to note that even though the described microneedle systems are minimally invasive, there is a risk of infection and inflammation at the administration site, which may result in further discomfort and pain. I have spent a fortune on eye creams, following recommendations from Caroline Hirons and dermatologists to recommendations online but nothing I have tried has worked, well until trying these.
