While it is not necessary to format memory cards in cameras and you could go through the same process on your computer, I find it simpler and faster to do it in camera. Lexar cards have been generally reliable, but I stay away from their SD cards due to previous failures (pins broke off, card failures, etc). After losing a memory card with the best pictures from a trip I took a while ago, I knew it was time to get organized, so that it does not happen again.
