About this deal

Also, turning the “let’s throw things at Baldr” game into an orgy of transphobic violence is absolutely nutso to me. While the noted trickster has a high profile these days thanks to Marvel, this is a completely unrelated take on the character. Starting with the Norse creation myths, the trickster god Loki takes the reader on a wild ride through Norse mythology, from the era when the gods—the founders of Asgard—defeated a race of monsters, and then hurtles through legendary stories, including Odin hanging himself on the World Tree, the theft of the corrupting gold ring, and the murder of Baldr, the god of love and the sun.

An Instant National Bestseller • One of The New York Times 100 Notable Books of 2022 • An NPR Book We Loved in 2022 • Named a Best Fiction book of 2022 by the Washington Post, Times (UK), Financial Times, and The Guardian.Black buds grace the arching twigs that spring so full of dormant life from its ancient boughs, many of them several dozen metres distant from the great trunk. This enchanting tale of a cursed mythical creature and the lonely fisherman who falls in love with her is "a daring, mesmerizing novel…single-handedly bringing magic realism up-to-date" (Maggie O’Farrell, best-selling author of Hamnet). Check out when to expect the latest Marvel , Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, what’s next for the DC Universe on film and TV , and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who . He falls completely in love (something he does several times throughout the novel, with other gods and goddesses). They were going to lose the sun and the moon and the beautiful goddess Freyja [to pay the builder for getting it done in a year].

then again maybe modern retellings are simply not my cup of tea as it has been proven time and time again no matter how hard i try to enjoy them.Unlike Odin, or Thor or Frigg or any of the Aesir, or Freya and Frey and Njordr and the Vanirunlike the giants or the elves or men, I am one of those who sprang into being because the world demanded me; it had no choice. i was not prepared for this since i only bought this book because of its title, nor have i any knowledge of Norse myths (MCU knowledge doesn't count) - i did/do not know which stories are true to the original myths and which are not.

This is a story about the characters, rather than the plot, and their importance in Loki's life, whether positively or negatively. Finally, this book is so incredibly nastily misogynistic in its portrayal of women almost exclusively as hysterical sex-crazed harpies. It’s certainly written for an adult audience and pulls no punches in its depictions of the often ghastly Norse myths; all mud, bloody dismemberment and “maggots as big as badgers”.

Burgess also infuses the gods with humanity: Odin sacrifices his eye to gain further knowledge, and turns into a wreck of a man, everyone’s great-grandfather on the edge of death. Melvin Burgess is a tremendous author- I remember reading Junk and Kite at school and being blown away by how open and adult he was in his writing that was targeted towards younger readers. In spite of his cleverness and sparkling wit (or, perhaps, because of this), Loki struggles to find his place among the old patriarchal gods of supernatural power and is constantly at odds with the god of thunder—Thor.
