About this deal

She flagged down a zookeeper, who said that Morganetta had once been in local parades, and had done stunts like competing against undergrads in a tug-o’-war at a nearby school, but that she had gotten unpredictable and violent in her old age. After Jenna's 13th birthday, she sets out to find help, when she meets a drained detective named Virgil, and Serenity, a psychic who had lost her ability to connect to the beyond. Picoult uses her trademark multiple points of view to good effect in this novel, which has more heart than some of her recent novels. When Shirley came into the barn that night, in the stall beside Jenny’s, Jenny began to pound at the bars between them, trying to get to Shirley.

Gideon confesses that there was an affair between himself and Alice, and when his wife, who had also worked with them, Grace, found out, she committed suicide. Jodi Picoult novels always tackle interesting subjects and this one taught me a lot about elephants. The main trio - Jenna, Virgil, and Serenity - all come from different places in life yet complement each other so well, due to their humorous bickering and shared desire to find Alice. When Gideon tells his mother-in-law that he is going to leave with Alice, she says she hopes he gets everything he deserves. Having read Larger Than Life, one of the prequels to this novel (the other being Where There's Smoke), I thought that I was prepared for what Jodi Picoult was going to present me with in this, her twenty-second novel, but boy was I wrong! LEAVING TIME may be [Picoult’s] finest work yet and is sure to produce much discussion after reading it. They’d slip away from their herds and would lumber across the dusty landscape, like the titans we read about in seventh grade in Greek Mythology. Since becoming a fixture on bestseller lists eight years ago, every novel Jodi Picoult puts out has been touted as her “best one yet.

Sempre que lemos um livro que até nem nos parece mau mas nos recorda outros anteriores , pescámos um peixe vulgarote, tipo sardinha ou carapau! Money from poaching fuels instability in Democratic African Republic, and there are rumors that Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army was funded with the proceeds of illegal ivory from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Jenna Metcalf was just three years old when she last saw Alice and has spent a decade longing to be reunited with mother, or at least finding out what happened to her.I tend to avoid that particular smelly, fly-invested area of the zoo, and rarely venture over for the demonstrations. As the three work together to uncover what happened to Alice, they realize that in asking hard questions, they’ll have to face even harder answers.

I’ve always thought elephants walk as if they have music being piped into their heads that no one else can hear. There is plenty of information about elephants and death that are not fables, but instead cold, hard science.

of elephants in North American zoos are overweight, 40% have foot or joint problems, and 80% have behavioral tics like head bobbing or swaying due to stress. While I wanted a little more complexity from some of the characters' paradigms, I still found myself getting caught up in my feelings as the story progressed and the characters' relationships deepened. At the Elephant Sanctuary in TN, elephants reacted so badly to helicopters and planes that they had to institute a no fly zone overhead. Alice was a scientist who studied elephants, first in Botswana, Africa then at the New England Elephant Sanctuary in the US, where both African and Asian captive elephants were able to live out the remainder of their lives in a natural habitat, free from the chains of bondage.

I loved the story, came to appreciate the inseparable bond between mother and daughter and learned a lot about the plight of elephants in the world today. It’s got everything you’d expect from Picoult: the impeccable pacing, the efficient prose, the expertly rendered characters, the brushstrokes of deep emotional brilliance, the carefully presented moral dilemmas. When Nevvie, Gideon's mother-in-law finds out that Gideon and Alice are going to run away with Jenna, Nevvie tells him he hopes that Gideon gets everything he deserves. Then, I was reading something and learned that in the wild, an elephant mother and daughter stay together their whole lives until one of them dies.Using her now familiar and equally comfortable format of multi-charachter point of view each character provides a piece to the puzzle of what lead to Alice's disappearance from the New England Elephant Sanctuary soon after a co-worker is trampled to death.
