Four 70cl bottles of natural cask strength 12 year old Lagavulin from the Diageo Special Releases 2023, 2022, 2021 and 2020. Shortly after it opened, a distillery named Ardmore was opened close by, though this became part of Lagavulin a few decades later. I’m not even a fan of peat in general, but as the expert reviewers mention, it’s more smoky than peaty and it’s so rich, dark, and sweet from the oak and sherry that the smoky flavor isn’t overwhelming at all. A true connoisseur, Offerman later teamed up with the distillery to launch an 11-year-old Scotch whisky dubbed the Lagavlin Offerman Edition, and most recently released the Lagavulin Offerman Edition: Guinness Cask Finish. After watering down, I took a whiff, and it transported me to memories of when I'd stayed in a Yorkshire Inn, in Buckden, awaking at 4 in the morning to bright sunshine, and that formidable countryside smell filled with grass, earth, fresh air and a distant steam train/smoking chimney/remnants of last night's bonfire.

So there’s a lot of change going on at the distillery, and with that they’re just produced a 10 Year Old to join their core range. Having rested in first fill American oak bourbon casks for a decade, it's a glorious combination of sweet, salt and spicy notes, all wrapped up with fragrant peat smoke. No it's wise I suppose this has to be considered the smoke here scotches but it's not like I get a ton of smoke off the nose. We were looking forward to sampling this new expression of Lagavulin as the Islay distillery has long been one of our favourites.

These included a Lagavulin 8 Year Old (which would eventually become part of the distillery’s core range), a Lagavulin 25 Year Old and the Lagavulin 12 Year Old (a regular feature of Diageo’s Special Releases). The single malt rested in both refill and rejuvenated American oak hogsheads as well as ex-Bodega European oak butts, making for a complex fruity and smoky dram. After the wonderful reception that the Lagavulin 8 Year Old 200th Anniversary Edition received when it was released in 2016, the Islay-based distillers decided to add this delicious expression to their permanent core range! There’s also the 2020 and 2021 Lagavulin Distillers Editions, which are double-matured in Pedro Ximinez casks, as well as the eight-year-old Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Colin Gordon, who was previously site operations manager at Port Ellen Maltings, took over the role, with the changeover taking place just after the Fèis Ìle festival.
