In Hug O' War, he shares the importance of showing kindness to others instead of trying to overpower them. Katherine Mansfield has been praised for her ability to simplify complex emotions through short stories and poetry.

When looking at an open form poem consider some of the structural ideas, such as rhyme and the rhythm, and think about how these have been created and why. Many of his poems centered around love and ‘[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]’ is perhaps the best-known of them all. Wordsworth observes a rainbow in the sky and is filled with joy at the sight of a rainbow: a joy that was there when Wordsworth was very young, is still there now he has attained adulthood, and – he trusts – will be with him until the end of his days. This famous poem shows that everything in life is cyclical and that the beauty in nature only lasts for a short period of time. The standalone poem ‘Rondel of Merciless Beauty’ (here translated from Middle English) recounts Chaucer’s heartbreak after being left by the love of his life, pledging his everlasting devotion to her even though it pains him. While the sorrow felt after the speaker’s heart has been broken is clear, the poem ultimately ends with hope that the pair can both have a new beginning — albeit apart. The verses in this beautiful collection will transport you to vibrant autumnal scenes, from harvest festival to Remembrance Day.

By doing so, it leaves the reader to experience the message in a personal way and to connect emotionally to the poem. Langston Hughes (1902-1967) had a lonely childhood, but he was raised by his grandmother who had a love of literature, so Hughes turned to books during those lonely years.

Centuries ago, travelling poets shared tales and news in ballads – ballads were easy to remember as they used quatrains and alternating rhyme schemes. Haikus are often about the similar subjectmatter, such as nature, what can be found in it, and the changing of the seasons. One of Portugal’s greatest poets, Luís Vaz de Camões is known for his lyrical poetry and dramatic epics.

It includes the features of an acrostic poem, and there’s even a poem template for your pupils to try writing their own. Perhaps her greatest inspiration is the Welsh landscape and all the human stories that it hosts: as UK Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy has said, 'Gillian Clarke's outer and inner landscapes are the sources from which her poetry draws its strengths'.Rondel of Merciless Beauty" by Geoffrey Chaucer Upon my word, I tell you faithfully Through life and after death you are my queen; For with my death the whole truth shall be seen. Similar to repetition, anaphora is where a word or words is repeated at the beginning of successive phrases, clauses, or lines. Each poem has a link to the date on which they appear, with verses from poets such as Robert Louis Stevenson, John Betjeman, Amy Lowell, Paul Laurence Dunbar, William Shakespeare and Christina Rossetti. Whilst poems about heartbreak might not be as uplifting as those about the joys of love, they can be equally as beautiful and meaningful. Originating in Japan, the haiku is a three-line poem that has five syllables in the first and last line, and seven syllables in the middle line.
