All of the complex worldbuilding Silvera has put into the premise of the novel is hard to fit into something that is paced like a contemporary/realistic YA book. I never intended to fully mirror any marginalized community’s experiences, but for anyone who has ever been oppressed for just being, or been blamed for what someone else who shares their identity may or may not have done, I imagine they may relate to what the magical people within this novel are going through. Intermingling with normal human beings on the streets of New York City, Celestials are people born with superpowers, and Spectres are mortals who have managed to steal their power from the blood of magical creatures. While those novels involve fantastical elements, those elements take second stage to his exploration of the relationships they make possible. In this urban setting where magic has always existed both for good and evil, two 18-year-old twin brothers are struggling to find their place and their future. Fleshing out these two opposing groups and giving more of an individual voice and backstory to the point of view characters we see from them could reduce confusion when reading.
