Artfully placed red herrings, a large cast of multifaceted characters and a gripping pace will keep them engrossed. In 2007, Rankin appeared in programmes for BBC Four exploring the origins of his alter-ego character, John Rebus. Rankin is, unfortunately, clearly not computer savvy, and the level of sophistication regarding technical matters sounds closer to about 1991 than 2001 (when the book was written) -- in either case, Rankin sorely underestimates the technical know-how the police would have at their disposal. It’s a setup that leaves scant room for law enforcement officers or for Kyle Westergaard, the 12-year-old paperboy damaged since birth by fetal alcohol syndrome, who’s walked away from the wreck with a prize all too many people would kill for. Like Rebus, readers will find no city more beautiful than Edinburgh, no locale more intriguing than Arthur’s Seat—and no characters in the genre more provocative or sharply delineated than Rankin’s ongoing cast.Rankin does a lot of the basic stuff -- the writing, the suspense, and especially the personal (and professional) relationships -- well, but he's built it on a flimsy situation here, and the book groans under the strain. Rankin is the singer in the six-piece band Best Picture, formed by journalists Kenny Farquharson ( The Times) and Euan McColl ( The Scotsman) in 2017, and featuring Bobby Bluebell on guitar. But what is most fascinating is the interaction between the misfit cast assembled to help solve the mystery of the disappearance of the student daughter of an influential Edinburgh banker. Inspector Rebus is a cynical, middle-aged detective, who works in the underbelly of Edinburgh, Scotland. of the 19 Inspector Rebus novels have been adapted for television between 2000 and 2007 in four series.
