About this deal

Though the gaming media found that the finished game backed away from this controversial promise, [5] and Sears said that he had convinced Ellison that having a game with only negative endings was a bad idea, [2] in a 2013 interview Ellison insisted that "I created it so you could not win it. One hundred and nine years later, four men and one woman (Benny, Gorrister, Nimdok, Ted, and Ellen) live in an endless underground complex created by AM, one of the only habitable places left on Earth. Producer David Mullich supervised The Dreamers Guild's work on the game's programming, art, and sound effects; he commissioned film composer John Ottman to make the soundtrack. There is an existentialist angst that overcomes me from this version of our potential afterlife and I'm grateful this story was short.

The world's current top supercomputer can perform 442 trillion (million million) operations per second and has a memory capacity of somewhere around 3PB (three million megabytes). Sure the idea had potential and there were really strong moments, but overall, it is a mess and falls flat and every of its aspects is underdeveloped. Ellison also voiced the supercomputer "AM" and provided artwork of himself used for a mousepad included with the game. Sure one could assume all that as I did, but it there is too much speculation and too little of it is actually to be found in the text.Ellen– Ellen, once an engineer with a promising career ahead of her, is transported to a pyramid made of electronic junk and with its interior resembling an Egyptian temple whose décor is largely yellow. So for me one of the big flaws of the story (vs the game), is that I can’t see why the machine should have been angry and vengeful for having been built – perhaps because this specific one – the supercomputer in the story’s name is AM – perhaps AM is angry because he had been built for the purpose of war? The player interacts with the game by making decisions through ethical dilemmas that deal with issues such as insanity, rape, paranoia, and genocide.

Since the story takes place in the mind of a mad god who can make anything happen, the team chose a variety of art styles for each of the scenarios, ranging from the unsettling perspectives used in German Expressionist films to pure fantasy to stark reality. However, good acts are rewarded by increases in the character's spiritual barometer, which affect the chances of the player destroying AM in the final adventure. Ellison’s short story “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream” follows five characters as they navigate a post-apocalyptic landscape inside the mechanical bowels of AM, a sadistic supercomputer. It would have been far better if one was left wondering, if this was just a group in a post apocalyptic world in which one has become delusional and mad, killing his companions and trying to deal with it, instead of all being connected to sadistic computers. The real Gorrister joins the group to their surprise, and they realize it was another one of AM's illusions.
