Bobby Beausoleil and Susan Atkins, however, had been arrested on a more serious charge: the July 27 torture and murder of Gary Hinman. It would really be interesting to have the author update this book, as I would be fascinated to hear what he thinks about the case now. We used to have a laugh about this, that or the other, in a light-hearted way, and some intellectual would read us, some symbolic youth generation wants to see something in it.

The word "Pig" was written in blood at the crime scenes, and the phrase "Healter Skelter" (a misspelling of the Beatles song) was scrawled at the second home, the one belonging to The Labiancas. That Charlie and his girls would go on a regular basis (free love meant free STDS, which often needed treating) is no secret; Bugliosi wrote about it himself in his brief section on this period. Bugliosi opens the book between midnight and 3 o’clock in the morning on Saturday, August 9, 1969, at the Beverly Hills address of 10050 Cielo Drive. In 1955, between prison sentences, Manson married Rosalie Jean Willis, a 17-year-old hospital server. On the wall in the living room, not far from Hinman’s body, were the words POLITICAL PIGGY, printed in the victim’s own blood. Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders was later the title of a best-selling book about Manson and his crimes.

For these crimes, Manson received the death penalty in 1971, a sentence that was commuted to life in prison the following year. Anyway this is a great song it is a shame that it has been associated with one of the most gruesome crimes of the 20th century. In December 1968, Charles Manson heard this song, as well as others from The White Album, and interpreted them as a warning of an approaching race war.

As for Manson, he disputed Bugliosi's interpretation of the Helter Skelter theory he used to prosecute the case, telling Rolling Stone, "that doesn't even make insane sense. In 1969, the county sheriff had taken them into custody, not realizing that they were involved in the heinous murders. And at the end, the only way off the kit was, 'Look, my fingers are bleeding, and I just have to get up.
