About this deal

With this new volume, Nick and Charlie’s lovely blooming relationship gets under the spotlight for the third time, so if you need a little help refreshing your memory of what Nick and Charlie have been up to, check out our recap before continuing with this review.

The webcomic gained a significant following, leading Oseman to launch a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the publication of a limited run of graphic novels covering the first two chapters of the series (retroactively now Volume 1) on 20 June 2018. An LGBTQ+ graphic novel about life, love, and everything that happens in between: this is the third volume of the bestselling Heartstopper series. Yet, these feelings are heightened to exorbitant levels in Heartstopper, for Alice Oseman makes the most of her masterful handling of non-verbal stylistic devices.

First and foremost, the most recurrent topic in this volume of Heartstopper is the constant battle of coming out. Kelley Gile reviewed Volume One in the School Library Journal, praising the dialogue, detailed facial expressions in the art, and "a font that mimics handwriting [that adds] to the adorkability[ sic] factor". There is no doubt that Alice Oseman’s works always manage to stir some majorly strong emotions with narratives that lend a strong voice and shed a light on the struggles of teenagers with utmost and tactful care. In a further review of Volume Two, Martaus reiterated her previous comments and said that the storytelling of the second volume "moves effortlessly from tearful poignance to laugh-worthy moments to stirring romance". By Alice Oseman, winner of the YA Book Prize, Heartstopper is about love, friendship, loyalty and mental illness.

Despite the comic being available online, it is pretty obvious that we readers cannot get our hands on the physical copies of Heartstopper soon enough.I loved how we were able to get glimpses into their time together and have a little side love story to enjoy, especially with the bonus comic that goes along with this volume. The series is an expanded adaptation of Oseman's 2015 novella, Nick and Charlie, although the characters originally appeared in her 2014 novel, Solitaire. Continuing with her simple, yet charming drawing style, Oseman follows Nick and Charlie through the first stages of their relationship. I also find great enjoyment in reading about the experience of others around the world within their works of fiction. Meanwhile, Tao and Elle will face their feelings for each other, Tara and Darcy share more about their relationship origin story, and the teachers supervising the trip seem… rather close…?

They were released on 7 February and 11 July 2019, [8] 6 February 2020 and 6 May 2021, respectively. After much discussion with Nick and conflict about his choices, Charlie chooses to tell his friends about Nick and his relationship. But coming out isn’t just something that happens once – there’s Nick’s older brother, and a school trip to Paris, not to mention all the other friends and family – and life can be hard, even with someone who loves you by your side. The graphic novel became the top-selling children's book in the UK following the popularity of the Netflix series. Oseman "fell in love" with the couple while writing the novel and decided that she needed to tell their story.

In opposition to this struggle, Alice Oseman also shines a light on the positive fact that, more often than not, these moments will be faced with unconditional support. I didn’t even realise Nick had a brother until he was introduced and I didn’t expect him to be a huge d. In October 2018, Hachette Children's Group (HCG) acquired the rights to physical publishing of the first two volumes of Heartstopper, [7] and by January 2019, the third and fourth volumes. This really hurt me to read because as I said above, I hate that people have to come out and in turn be scared of people hating them. She initially released the e-book novellas Nick and Charlie and This Winter featuring the characters in 2015, but eventually realised that their story needed an episodic structure that was more suited to a webcomic or graphic novel format. Contrarily to common misconception, as Oseman very poignantly highlights, coming out is a very tiring process which queer people have to go through time and time again: with relatives, friends, potential partners, and—the worst of all—nosy acquaintances.
