About this deal
In Hair in Funny Places her artwork is without exaggeration some of the best she has ever done- it is brilliant.
The illustrations are silly, but also show girls and boys in their various stages of development in appropriate ways. The text which takes the form of a conversation between a small girl and her teddy bear is ingenious and funny -it is the behaviour of Mr and Mrs Hormone (wonderfully depicted) which is responsible for and plays havoc with both physical and emotional states of girls and boys between (roughly) the ages of eight and eighteen. This shows both boys and girls undergoing changes, in a funny way , with comical illustrations and second person narrative. Much of her work is earthy comedy, having titles like The Smelly Book, The Hairy Book, The Slimy Book and The Silly Book. In Hair in Funny Places her artwork is without exaggeration some of the best she has ever done: it is brilliant.
Puberty can be daunting for children and the imagery of evil little monsters cooking up batches of chemicals entitled "Essence of Pube", ready to be pumped around the body, will hardly put children at ease.Who else but Babette Cole would have the temerity to tackle this subject in a picture book, and the genius to carry it off.
