About this deal

Happy Mondays were pivotal for me, and the Rave On EP from which this came took everyone’s breath away. State weren’t eyeing the charts, they had a more specific aim; to get the record played at the club. This was largely based on Simple Minds ‘Theme For Great Cities’ with the added vocal hook from Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. House music was still underground – there were some commercial hits, but outside of specialist shows the best music was still only being heard in a few clubs.

After the release of ‘Pacific State’ in the Summer of 1989, there would be some controversy about writing credits – Gerald Simpson had contributed to the making of the track – but with Gerald carving out a career of his own, 808 State moved on without him, and signed to ZTT Records. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the opening of Manchester’s legendary Haçienda nightclub, which will be celebrated on November 12 during a sold-out gig at Depot Mayfield Manchester as part of this year’s Warehouse Project. Dave Seaman: The New York based Sleeping Bag label released many huge club tracks throughout the 80s but this was the one that really connected with the UK’s rave movement. This recording is just a curio, rather than a bona fide release, but a neat example of the journey fans of indie and classic rock were taking in and around the Hacienda in the late 1980s. If my memory serves me correctly, I got my copy from the legendary Spin Inn Records in Manchester, my preferred vinyl emporium of choice around this time.

The Hacienda opened in Manchester in May 1982 and had a profound effect on the way clubs looked (it swerved the trad nightclub stylings and embraced a warehouse look) and was a magnet for musicians, music fans and all manner of creative types. In your user account, you can import your Spotify library or ‘follow’ artists you find on our site to add them to your ‘favourites’. Dave Seaman: Out of New Jersey this one, where Tony Humphries’ legendary sessions at the Zanzibar were inspiring a whole new wave of local producers. One of the most famous Acid House anthems of the 80s, which sticks in the mind thanks to its tribal-like chanting. The younger generation started coming into the Hacienda in the mid-1980s rejected a lot of this anti-disco prejudice.

At this point Rofe was now officially retained and armed with only a copy of the International Showcase Music Business Guide, a complete lack of knowledge of disco music licensing and Rob's ten grand, he set off to attempt the second, crucial phase: licensing the actual tracks themselves. In celebration of ten years of club couture; a catwalk show featuring…(big list of non-Mancunian designers)". Street food includes Wrap Up Burritos and nachos, hot dogs and fries at Grandpa's Sausages and dumplings at Tibetan Kitchen.Danny Howells: The fusion of indie and dance might not seem like much now but at the time it was a pure revelation. I think I first laughed when I heard it was by Chris Rea as I only knew him for his cheesy pop, but this was, and is, phenomenal. it’s easy to underestimate the impact that they had on urban music back then, but with their debut album, and the accompanying singles, Soul II Soul really altered the course of music, period.
